Solid Slug variation?

Recommended Posts

I put my FAC in for 3 1 for 1 variations last week after selling 3 guns, asked for a Sec.1 shotgun, .223 rifle and a .22LR rifle (which I'd had already but sold.

Just had a call from Firearms licensing, why do I want a sec.1 shotgun?, for target/practical shotgun as I put on the variation I took in, OK then, no problem. Why do I want solid slugs?, same answer, can't have them for at least 2 weeks as the manager is on hols until the 25th and needs to make a decision!. What's my good reason for wanting a .223?, er ....... because I want one to shoot?, and why do I want a 22LR?, because it's a 1 for 1 and I want a different rifle to the one I just sold.

Apparently if I want I can have my FAC back, so I asked if the variations (apart from the slugs) would be on it?, not much point otherwise may as well wait the 2 weeks or so, yes but will have to bring it back again when/if they decide I can be trusted with slugs.

No solid slugs are mainly used for practical shotgun shooting. I applied for a FAC shotgun and slugs got refused as it wasn't t a good enough reason I had I wanted them for shooting foxes he told me no when he came out to visit me and said no to an FAC shotgun as I didn't have a good enough reason. My reason was I wanted it for harvest time walking by the combine at harvest for all the bunnies running out and I didn't have to stop all the time and reload and miss lots of opportunities he said if there was owt standing after 3 shots there was something wrong but I didn't want it to let all 8 shots off at once!!!

I thought "because I want one to shoot" was a perfectly good reason, why else would I buy a rifle in the first place? :) lol

Seriously though I did mention that I'm down to one good shoulder and arm and that some days I could do with a bit less kick when lying prone :) Standing up for clays or practical is better as I can lean my (not inconsequential) weight into the gun and absorb the recoil better. I could of course of said my 2 .308s are for F/FTR class and are for 600m and that my local range was limited to 300m so needed something for shorter shooting.

Had a chat about that while I was there, 150 buy and 200 hold at the moment but can increase if I show high enough use in a few months. I'll have to send it back later as they didn't put on the moderators for the 22LR or .223, as I only had 3 free 1 for 1s they just put the 3 guns on, had they said that when they phoned me I would have taken enough money with me and paid the £26 and have them added there and then.

Mark, good question :) There was a Mossberg 590 for sale but looks like it went last night :( I rang a couple of placed this afternoon about a Hatsan MPA but no luck, I do have a "spare" Escort 2+1 I can use for a first outing or look at getting it converted to 7+1. Do you know who sells slug rounds locally?, or I could but the slugs from DodgyRog and re-load some of my existing 7-1/2 fibre carts. Is Pittington fibre only or are plastics OK?.

Fibre only i'm afraid! I've been buying up the remains of local stock for the past year and all the reasonably priced stuff is gone (that i know of). Theres still some buffalo stuff at Bradfords but it's £25+ IIRC. Been waiting for Ray to get a load in at the Mayfair but HSE or similar seems to be messing him about. <_< I've got enough for the next competition but that'll be it all gone so i don't know what i'm going to do

Thanks Mark, so can I just use the fibre wad 7-1/2s then? or do I need slugs?.

Yep thats what i use, some people use #6's and some people with more money than sense use #5's   You won't need any slugs with you at Pittington for the shoot but if you want to bring some for a blast afterwards thats fine :good:

Cheers :)

Does the club have an exemption cert for guests, I'm sure I told you about my son who has Aspergers, still hasn't got his SGC or FAC yet as we're in the process of suing his GP and getting evidence is like pulling teeth. He's shot clays 6 years as part of the Beamish club and has shot full bore for over a year with Tyne Valley, he does have his NRA Certification Card.

Thats a tricky one, i don't think we've ever had guests down the quarry who don't have either an SGC or FAC. Best ask Ray about that one. If you're not going to be at the club before then, just send an email, they're usually responded to the same day.

Cheers, may be able to have a run over tomorrow and see who's in, is it Ray the owner with the beard?. I can never remember who's who apart from Campbell and Jonathan :D

Just got through cleaning and sorting 120 .223 cases (described as PPU twice fired) I got off a Full-Bore Uk member, almost useless!, 52 are PPU, rest are a mix of 2 batches of IMI, Winchester, TZ stamped 1983 and RORG stamped 1989. At least 20% have had the flash holes chamfered and enlarged :(

Any of them should be able to tell you, but yes Ray has a beard and he's invariably tinkering with something on the seats!

Cookoff013, what's the problem with loading my own slug rounds?.

loading slugs are fine, but loading a slug in a shot recipe is a sure way of turning any gun inside out. (ie... cutting out the shot and adding a slug to your doctored cartridge.)

Didn't think there'd be much of a problem given the slug is sized to fit properly in the shell and is actually the same weight or 1/8oz lighter than the original load. The original crimp is removed and replaced with a modified one which is also lighter. These two factors alone will reduce chamber pressure, not increase it.

I'm planning to buy a press and hulls, wads and cards etc. and load from scratch rather than modify.

Edit. Just been reading some of your posts on Shotgun World from 2008!, did you come up with a good recipe for fibre wad slug loads?.

you hope

i`d make a suggestion of reloading from scratch. never fiddle with cartridges. i`ve helped and advised other shooters with this criteria. can load 1oz all the way to 40g slugs. be very cheap and fast too.

pm me for some infor and or hard data,
