malkiserow
Tomorrow I am off to a party just south of Oxford. The hosts have offered us use of their bit of river - Woooo Hooooo! They warned us about lots of overhanging trees and bushes.... sounds unkept! I've got some old boat rods (poor condition) and my normal excellent beach casting rod/reel.... Plus some other shortish carbon fibre poles (the sort with a little tab on the end to tie a bit of line to. Oh and a carbon fly-fishing rod but no reel for that. I've no flies either. I've some old floats, bits of lead etc. So what gear do I need and what to aim for in those Thames waters ....

sako751sg
You won't go far wrong with prawns, lead core with big trebles and a gaff.
hendersons
Try for a match rod, a reel, some lead shot , hooks and a few wagglers (floats) a pint or two of maggots wouldn't hurt either.
malkiserow
You won't go far wrong with prawns, lead core with big trebles and a gaff. I'll need to work out what these are So what fish are there likely to be in there?
malkiserow
So does the hook/bait need to hang from the float or let it sit on the bottom?

activeviii
Try for a match rod, a reel, some lead shot , hooks and a few wagglers (floats) a pint or two of maggots wouldn't hurt either. Please dont. you'll get told off.hehe. leave your kit at home and go to 'go outdoors' they sell a matt hayes set up for less than £20. stop at post office or go on line and get a day rod licence. then go to the local tackle shop when you get there and ask. they are in the area and know whats going on and how to fish the area. even a phone call to then can give you a good idea. UKPoacher
If you really are that keen; Rod licence from post office, cheap fishing kit from any decent tackle shop and a tin of sweetcorn. Now you are going to ask how to use it aren't you? Edited June 17, 2012 by UKPoacher

malkiserow
Just got back! Took what gear I had but I ended up cooking etc.... as luck would have it, the owner has some EA approved nets for CrayFish .... so I took some bait .... got 92! most of the girls were horrified at the crays in the bath overnight! Prep took 2 hours yesterday for all the tails and claws but ........Very tasty! Now I need to get sorted out for fishing as there was plenty of river that they have rights to and open water with not too many overhanging trees. And they had a canoe... happy days Thanks for the tips guys

PigeonEater
Now I need to get sorted out for fishing as there was plenty of river that they have rights to and open water with not too many overhanging trees. dont be so quick to discount those overhanging trees, especially ones that are touching the water. They create perfect fish holding spots. Sunken logs, old banks, debris rafts etc will most of the time hold decent fish!
