wildfowler.250
Just saw a gun that said,"choked 40 thou and 50 thou". Can anyone explain this to me? I can relate to 1/4, Mod ect but never heard it this way. Also, if it says choked 5/8ths, is that a weird way of saying 1/2 choke,(basically)? Cheers! Guest cookoff013
its about right, but dont forget that that is the restriction, not the bore gauge. using a simple choke gauge is a real easy way to confuse yourself. classic 12bore is .729" although in modern times these get changed up and down to subbore and overbore. often taking brand names such as invector, invector+, potima, optima+, mobil. etc. but basicly different brands of gun have different size barrels. the chamber must conform to CIP and or SAAMi spec though. i think for a 12gauge the chamber must be 0.800"
wymberley
From what has already been correctly said, those barrels are full choke and full plus. For 'full plus', dependent on where you are and who you talk to, there are variou different terms. 5/8 is half way between 1/2 (4/8) and 3/4 (6/8). It probably won't be long before some dolt comes up with 11/16. If you consider that for our bog standard game cartridge the difference in the number of pellets in a 1/2 and 3/4 choke pattern at 40 yards is 14. Amend that to 5/8 and it becomes a meaningless 7. It's still only 11 for No 8s (1 oz). The current standard for a 12 bore barrel is 0.728"

Graham M
The current standard for a 12 bore barrel is 0.728" I may be a little out of touch in my advancing years but over the last hundred years or so wasn't it always 0.729". I do stand to be corrected if this has changed over the last couple of years. G.M.

However, even that is no longer strictly true - and you're not going to like this - it's now 18.5mm. Just to rub it in, chambers are 65/70mm, etc. Service pressure isn't, it's proof and not in tons, but bar.
