ferreter10
I would love some advice of anyone who may have fished any of the dart and /or tributaries for fly choices and best places to go. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks
Fisherman Mike
I would love some advice of anyone who may have fished any of the dart and /or tributaries for fly choices and best places to go. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks Crikey youve picked a rum time to go with the amount of water running off at the moment...However the Dart runs off pretty quickly so you may have timed it just right.. Ive fished the Hannaford fishery stretch many times and on the Dart in general have always had most success with wet flys and Nymphs like your basic Klinks, GHHE, Pheasant tails and Black and peacock spiders...ive never had much success on anything bigger than a 14 and have caught surface feeding trout on small Daddies at this time of year which can also work well sub surface. Good luck and savour the atmosphere the Dart is a very special, Halcyon river in my opinion..
ferreter10
I am hoping that no more rain falls from now untill we arrive in Friday and hopefully it should be about right! That's great, have a healthy stock of small nymphs so should be okay on that front. Only ever been camping on dartmoor and it truly is a wonderful place! To be honest if I catch one fish for the whole week I'll be happy just to be down there! Thanks for the advice and wish us some good weather! Stopping off on the taw between Exeter and Barnstable on the way down to get us started!
wymberley
For us in East Devon, we have rain forcast all next week with the wind from the W/SW which means that whatever falls on us will much, much less than what Dartmoor gets. If it all goes to pot for you (and hopefully not) and the rivers are no good, try the Arundell Arms Hotel in Lifton. They have various beats on the Tamar, etc, but they also have a lake in Lifton itself. It is a flooded quarry and the water is crystal clear. It's a real tester and worth a look if all else fails. The hotel recommends a 20ft leader to avoid spooking the fish and it's not a load of bull. Edited June 30, 2012 by wymberley
ferreter10
Oh shoot... This really isn't looking good... Although that sounds inviting if all else fails. On a tight budget however, and the tamar is expensive isn't it? Maybe I should just scrap the fishing rods and bring the Benelli down instead! Haha

Haha Yep, Tamar is a little pricey but we're looking at the lake because the rivers are out of the equation (for this discussion) and this is acceptable. ferreter10
My problem is that I have plenty of lakes I can fish down here.... I love the idea of rivers in middle of nowhere with Idillic scenery. But as you say river fishing in the west country may be out of the question for now :(. wymberley
Nah, chin up and come on down - there's always Ashcombe (Dawlish) for the Benelli!
ferreter10
I was never in doubt about coming down... The debate was rods, gun or alcohol. Alcohol has won!
wymberley
Ah, alcohol! I'd have met you for a pint in the Fox and Hounds in Eggesford but I'm on holiday in Wales. Don't suppose you can guess what the weather forcast is!
Lord Geordie
Your fly choice changes all the time. Also after catching you can spoon the contents of the fishes stomach and see what they are feeding on and change flies accordingly. Having never fished the river in question I am ill equiped to offer any gems of wisdom for your trip. After all the rain I think you stand a better chance of fly fishing over the wet fish counter at Morrissons.
