Lee Slug Hulls

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm looking to start hand loading some 1oz lee slugs I can find correct wads powder primers etc for a given recipe but i'm having trouble sourcing the correct hulls in the UK (Winchester AA.. hens teeth, rocking horse doo) What's the equivelant over this side of the pond?

Any advice would be great.

I'm using these, http://www.siarm.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_25_38_39_137&products_id=1290&osCsid=9c1f1a47970529bd6ea30244b4196c32

Roll crimped onto 25gr of GM3 with the 32g Deer Slug, http://www.siarm.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_20_164_60&products_id=385

No intention of re-using the cartridges as I don't think I'll be shooting enough slug to make it worthwhile.

er...

i would like to suggest you look for a better recipe for shooting 32g slugs.

even gualani dont recomend GM3 is used for slugs at all. and most of that data is at the top end of the pressure spectrum anyway.

powder types such as A0 or tecna-n are mainly used.

i wouldnt even use gm3 for 1oz slugs let alone 32g ones.

i have a slight incling that your recipe "burns extremely clean"

The load data was from a Nobel Italian GM3 data sheet for a 32g load, 1.51g (23.3gr), I was advised by another shooter to increase by 10% for roll closure instead of crimped with a closure disk, these were producing 390m/s at 680 bar.

I take it that I was advised incorrectly then :(

I would like to use the GM3 if possible, I have 2Kg of it!, I do use it for some of my .44mag loads but at 5.2gr it may take a while to use it all!.

well then, you have been really stitched up on that one. i`m very sorry to say. the information is directly from nobelsport, but is actually shot data. you seriously shouldnt shoot any more of those loads. i wouldnt even use it for 1oz slugs. the data you have said is here....

http://www.nobelsport.it/public/pages/ENG/schedapol.asp?ProdottoID=548&FamigliaID=0

there is no slug data for this powder.

the powder you want is tecna-n or vectan A0. lower pressures and higher speeds (and reduced speed loads.)

i cannot say what pressures the slugs you loaded are. but i cannot stress enough, dont use that gm3 for large slugs. maybe it can be used for 24g / 20gram slugs, but please dont load any unless you get proven recipes.

the issues you may not have noticed are high pressure, uk / cip has a maximum of 740bar for 2,3/4" cartridges.

25grains is quite a healthy charge of powder anyway. even for shot !

as for where to go now, buy A0 or trade gm3 for some A0. another 20 gauge shooter should have some. ask on here,

the increase 10% for roll crimp is a slight con really, as it depends on powder burnrate, actual pressure, closure and crimp closure depth.

that original cartridge data is at above 90% of the available cip regulated pressure, so it was a hot load anyway. you added 10% more powder, and a slug. i`m sure they are over pressure.

slugs need slow burning powder, shot flexes when its initially fired. slugs dont.

cook.

Excellent :(

I haven't loaded any yet, I did try some Brenneke slugs in Hull Comp-X in place of the shot and those very quite a mild load.

So, not having a good day so far!.

I'll see if I can get hold of some A0, what load would you recommend for the 32g Deer Slugs (70mm cartridge)?.

http://www.gualandi.it/

12 FORTE POLVERE GR. 2,10 BORRA-PROIETTILE

2.1gram A0 with hot primer. it says reduce powder charge 10% for older guns. i would do this as caution anyway as there is no pressure data.

the classic wadded slug is 32g for 12gauge.

tecna-n powder - better for slugs.

12 FORTE POLVERE GR. 2,15 BORRA-PROIETTILE

12 FORTE POLVERE GR. 2,00 BORRA-PROIETTILE MAGNUM

still i would reduce by 10%

Is that old A0 or new A0?
