Four of us went to Tree Tops Newport today apart from thouroughly enjoying the shooting we have to mention how welcoming Steve and his crew were even though they were not cooking they went and got us bacon butty's how's that for service, and their cartridge prices were as cheap as anywhere around. The place is undergoing a refurbishment adding a shop, kitchen and new toilets on the back, we will be going back, and we look forward to when the alterations are complete.

Keep up the good work Tree Tops

On reading this and a few other posts mentioning Treetops my mate and I decided to give the place a try today as our usual ground had internationals on and a change of scenery is never any harm. Knowing the competition was on in advance I rang Treetops Friday to ask (as advised on their web page) if they were open/shooting was available on the coming Sunday to be told 'yes no problem but there's a lesson booked in for 11am', didn't know why I was being informed of this as I hadn't asked for a lesson, though I could probably do with a few lol. Anyway picked my mate up as usual and drove down arriving at about 11:30am being surprised at the lack of car parking space, I'd expected something much bigger given what I'd heard about the place and from their web page. We walked to the club house to be met by a very friendly lady who explained that the only person working was out giving a lesson, Ah the penny dropped!, I now realised why I had been told about the lesson during the phone call, however I still think they might have explained during the call that I'd not be able to shoot because the one and ONLY member of staff that would be working would be out shooting if I arrived between 11-12, ah well we thought we're here now and it's only half hour to wait and we may even find somewhere to park between now and then lol. Half hour came and went as did three other customers and still no singn of anybody coming back to the clubhouse so off we went up to our usual ground South Wales 2000 and had a great time as normal and they couldn't bilieve what we were telling them. Very poor business as far as I'm concerned, surly you'd put more staff on at the weekend especially when you know, or should know that one of the largerst most popular grounds in the area is going to be very busy due to competitions so you may be in line for extra custom. I will try again as I really would like to shoot there given the recommendations and the fact it looked really good, but we left today feeling very disappointed. I really do hope I just caught them on an off day.

They never used to be open on a sunday.........very odd did you explain you just wanted to "practise" and shoot clays?

Yes I explained that during the phone call, I might add that the lady who greeted us was outside the locked up clubhouse and the reason we could not shoot was there was no way of us being provided with a counter. Apologies if my previous post made it sound as if we actually accessed the clubhouse and spoke to a member of staff, we didnt, as far as the lady is concerned i'm not sure she worked there or was just a friendly member trying to be helpful. As said I hope I just caught them on an off day and the experience doesn't reflect normal business practice, also I would have thought a provider to the leisure industry would expect to be busiest on the weekend, possibly even more on a Sunday than a Saturday and so be extra staffed, I am even more surprised to hear they never used to be open Sundays at all.

Did you go and find the person giving the lesson and address this problem to him it is only a short walk covering all the traps, when we went there there were four people on duty,

When we asked about the weekend we were told that Saturday was their main day.

Why don't you call them and tell them what happened it may have been a misunderstanding somewhere.

It was quiet when we went there on a Tuesday probably six others shooting plus us four

Well i went and have to say i was disappointed they have spent the money on building the cabin bigger but seems worse to me, the shop is poorly stocked and not alot of anything (no shotguns on view), the club house is far less welcoming, prices have gone up, targets all very samey, little variety, the actual shooting ground seems to keep shrinking no traps to the left of the path, none over the far side of the stream (when i started going there 2/3 stands to the left of the path including the brilliant "Rat in a pipe" a couple over the far side of the stream at the end 3/4 rabbits now just one and the rest are unimaginative... Compared to Cross gun club in West mids very poor. It's a shame as it used to be great. Was very quiet for a Saturday compared to what i am used to, which is great for a quick round but not good for the business. Oh and I am pretty sure i got overcharged!

Shame to see the place going downhill....

If you don't like it, don't go there! Simple!

Well haven't been for 4 months thought i would see what it was like now, worse. So i don't think I'll bother again. Trap reliability seems better only one of those i tried had issues (empty and that's no biggy) but looks like i'll be travelling further in future. I was a real fan of the place 2-3 years ago perhaps it having been to more grounds elsewhere has changed my perception or its gone downhill.

Have since returned and shot there a handful of times now and have to say I have enjoyed shooting there but have to agree with HDAV on some points like they are not overly welcoming, are expensive compared to other grounds, for the cost of 100 at treetops I can shoot 125 and have change up at South Wales 2000, also the targets have been just about the same on each visit but are more like what you would get out rough shooting rather than target clays so that's good just lacking in variety, and I've never been there and had all the traps throw clays yet, there always seems to be more than one stand where you press for a clay and ****** all happens. That said once a month or so for a change of scenery its worth a visit.

I shot at Treetops yesterday & can honestly say every trap was working perfectly, I have shot there for many years & yes there were issues with traps not working from time to time, but I noticed the handset conectors have all now been changed. (not sure the conectors were the problem in the first place ???)

Up there today...all traps working, plenty of stock...bought a Toggi fleece for Christmas at a very competitive price. There have been over 20 shotguns, new and used for sale there for months...including new Rizzini and cheapo makes at competitive prices...even been offered a try before you buy.

The clubhouse is fabulous with central heating along with the return of the log burner...very warm welcome as usual.

Membership is being offered from 1 Jan to those who have not taken the micky last year and this (over the counter numbers)...so be honest folks, 1 or 2 breaks and the odd trap on the odd day may not be working. All the plugs and sockets have been renewed on the Claymates.

There cannot be any traps to the left of the path as this is reserved for airgun shooters. The range safety cert precludes shotgun shooting to the left of the path. Both rifle and pistol ranges are available with everything from a full field target setup to covered knockdown and paper target ranges. They cater for anything from a family day out, to a full FT competition.

Never been over-charged.

Best English Sporting range in S Wales.

I've not been down to Treetops in nearly a year since my membership expired (doing most of my clay shooting at SW200) but didn't there used to be several stands shooting off to the left of the path? Was there some change in the certification or did they decide to remove them to make way for the improved air-rifle offering?

The clays to the left were good but they had to be removed to be compliant.

The current layout gets updated regularly... usually when I have just about mastered them all. :lookaround:

It's a pity that the SW2000 sporting clays at the back are closed for winter. I'd go there more often. In addition, SW2000 are only open 4 days a week now...2 of which are for competitions. :ermm:

Steve at Treetops tells me that he will soon be installing Compaq Sporting ... at the bottom of the path, about midway thru the range...can't wait. :good:

Yes, Treetops are open 7 days a week now, for clays. :yahoo:

The current setup at SW2000, with the sporting stands using the the trap layouts is rubbish - you can't shoot trap if someone is on a sporting stand and vice versa. It's also unsafe having people out in front of the trap firing points IMO.

I'm interested to know what was non-compliant about the lefthand stands at Treetops, was it noise, shot fall out??
