Grouse beating north yorkshire/ northumberland

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'm over in north yorkshire near richmond next weekend, saturday the 18th and my girlfriend and i would love a day out beating on a grouse moor. We don't want payment for the day just the experience, although a brace wouldn't be unwelcome! If anyone knows of anyone/ anything we would be very grateful.

We're from newcastle and if anyone knows of any grouse beating opportunities in northumberland at any other time including midweek we would also be keen in getting involved.

Many thanks

Joe

I don't think you've got a great deal of a chance to be honest, not that many moors shoot on a Saturday & beating places during the kids holidays are at a premium, that fact that you'd do it for free means nothing. Showing willing & doing two or three days a week during September / October / November would get you on in August next year...... I'm not trying to be rude or anything, just trying to tell you how it is.

Hi Joe Robbo,

Grouse beating is not for the faint hearted mate, it is bloody hard work period:::

Heard couple of young guys talking at the Bar one evening, one asked the other if he was going ,,, Nah he replied going to wait for the pheasant season,,, these lads were about 16-17 years old.. Walking the springy turf is not easy, and you have to walk miles just to get to the START never mind beating... Sorry but its more than the truth to say its an exhausting day out..

You EARN every penny believe me.. Done it, wore the teeshirt.lol.

Loads of beating grouse that way, you will probably be very welcome if you are keen and do NOT let them down..

Unless you actually know someone who beats on the moors to get you a 'toe-in',it could take some time.None of the lads round here(North Pennines)would take anybody they didn't know when there are plenty of people they do know willing to go.Places are often handed down from generation to generation.

Get yourself out beating for a pheasant shoot if you can, many of these beaters work the moors also.

Thanks for the replies. I'm aware its unlikely but if you don't ask you don't get. I do a lot of shooting in season so don't get much time for beating apart from on one of the stand one walk one syndicates i'm in. We're both pretty fit and I appreciate thats its a really hard days work but was just looking for the experience whilst i was down that neck on the woods.

You could try a few of the contacts on gunsonpegs, search for shooting and you should get a few shoot names & numbers.

Good luck i hope you get a day.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll give it a try.
