zab10
resident would have been a better word for me to use , not feral what i said about the geese that are there all year round is correct as polestar has said most crops and cattle are inside by the time the large numbers arrive . Pole Star
I think its some 6 or 10 thousand BBL but I just cant see it happening in such a short space of time . will know more in the morn. see you soon . Just made a few enquires & I think the number BBL & of number of geese needing to be culled is still not decided so disregard the number of !0 or 12 thou . I understand any cut in the numbers of geese in the north of Scotland & the norther & western isles is still an ongoing debate ..

Pole Star
Well the geese have goslings about now & I am under the impression that the goose cull last August has had some effect on the resident geese population & I have not seen as many up my end of the loch but I am told down the other end at the RSPB reserve there are lots of geese & goslings about but time will tell . With the numbers shot before the grey's got here from Iceland last season it must have curtailed the numbers if only a little but time will tell , I have not heard any reports from the rest of Orkney yet . Pole Star
The Orkney goose cull I understand will start in 2 weeks & this time I understand the culling teams will be asking the farmers to pay the cost of a site visit to verify the number of geese , strange world ! . Certainly not so many on my property this summer so I think last years cull has made a difference here , but time will tell .
Pole Star
To those interested parties there is an article on Orkney grey goose cull in this weeks Countrymans weekly , or in short it reports on almost 3200 culled last season & the target this year is 5,500 . Pole Star
Moans & groans I have been hearing from shooting farmers are that the local geese will be very decoy shy this season due to the hammering they got last year & moans that the cull is being conducted the wrong way & it would be better just to let land owners go ahead & cull them themselves & put in returns each year . But SNH think they know best but such is life .

Pole Star
What a very interesting thread... Seems the artic foxes in iceland can't keep the numbers down haha ATB Tim Its not so much the Icelandic Greylags Tim its the local ones that are here all year for instance 2 years ago in the field below my house which runs down to the loch it had some 5 acres of barley stripped off , I would walk of the birds or fire a shot to put then off & the adults & young would flee back into the loch & wait off shore in a vast flotilla looking at me until I went back inside my cottage & then they would walk back up the loch edge & creep back into the field & munch away . No farmer tolerates 5acres of barley stripped off by rabbits & few will if any will put up with from greylags . Atb Pole Star
channa
It's a shame the culled geese have to be buried... They could put them in super markets or give them abroad, anything but bury them. Just seems such a waste of good meat even though they are just a pest. Very interesting i must say! Thanks PoleStar...ATB Tim

Terry P
I hope they are allowed to sell them, the thought of 5.500 geese just being shot and buried makes me want to weep.

I am not sure of this Terry & I have only just heard a snip so it will all depend on Scottish natural heritage ect weather it goes ahead . channa
There culling them shouldn't they be given to the needy, maybe homeless shelters for example? Whole different debate that though...Please keep us up to date Polestar as you get the info. Many thanks Tim
Pole Star
There is write up on the sale of culled goose meat in the Orcadian news paper today stating that wild goose meat will be on sale through licensed outlets in Orkney SNH has confirmed , this will be under strict controls to manage the population & the sale of this meat will from August 2013 to July 2014 . Orkney MSP Liam Mc Arthur welcomed the decision but warned it needs to be closely monitored , so any numbers boys thinking they will be able to come here & kill vast numbers of geese to pay for their trip you can forget it ! as its carried out by local guns & free shooting on the fore shore here is out as it belongs to the land owners in Orkney & Shetland as the law is very different . You should be able to find this on the net this week or next www.orcadian.co.uk Pole Star Edited August 9, 2013 by Pole Star

Pole Star
It will be interesting to see who the licensed outlets are local butchers ? local shops ? or can it be sent south by one of these licensed outlets ?. My own feeling is the average townie house wife will try it once & then never again unless she is an expert at cooking wildfowl & game & lets face it the old birds are only fit for the dog ! . I know of a lot of shooters here who wont eat them simply because they tried them once & it put them off for life ! . I cant help but wonder how much these geese or goose breasts will actually be ? , & will the old birds be sent just for pet food ? lots of questions . Penelope
Is this going to be for the culled geese only, or a permanent fixture for any grey shot on Orkney? The on line article doesn't mention much.
