keg
Indeed Robl, would agree but normally it stays with the mess.
Blunderbuss
Yes it is. It’s not what you might want from the Officers and Royals though. But they do both have a reputation for being a bit rowdy. Some of the stories I’ve heard about officers messes make a game of strip pool look tame. And you only need to go back a few years to see some Royals that really loved to party. Correct. Having been a member of both Sergeants and officers messes, I found (surprisingly) that the latter was much, much more lairy. As a crusty ex warrant officer watching young subalterns get up to 'high jinks' it was quite amusing, though I feigned disapproval to maintain the LE image To say what Harry did in LA is un officer like is very naive. Officers (and soldiers) get up to far worse all the time. Expecting young men paid to kill and be killed to be saints in their down time is likely to prove disappointing. The only thing he did wrong was get caught I think he's a good lad and desperately wants to prove himself as a soldier. Good on him The idea that a scarce and desperately needed combat resource like an Apache, in Afghanistan of all places, can somehow be shepherded out of danger to keep him safe is laughable. He'll be stood to, and will go were he's needed, which will inevitably be where ground forces need air support and will very be glad to see him. He's a brave young man and if I wore a hat, I'd take it off to him. Edited September 13, 2012 by Blunderbuss
keg
Well said Blunderbuss. I tried explaining this to somone once. You have a bunch of lads trained with lots of controlled agression, they have to let steam off somewhere.
Robl
I think it’s only the prudes or most naïve of people who are angry that a wealthy young man got involved in a bit of naughtiness in Vegas. My problem is partly with the security who let the girls keep their phones, but mostly with the girls for selling the pictures. I’m sure he’s done the same sort of thing over here in the past, but clearly the UK totty have a lot more discretion and ethics then the US totty. I’m proud of him for going to war. The Royal family are the heads of the armed forces. (I’m not sure of the specifics) As a family I think it’s right and proper that one of them take up an active posting like this. It’s not just a ceremonial position or an empty oath. They have sent one of their own to stand alongside the rest of the troops. That’s admirable. Thunderbird
Imagine if camera phones had existed at the time of 'Mountbottom' (as he came to affectionately be known) and the long list of all the other racy royals in history. What a subtly different UK/world we would live in now.
keg
You are right Robl, in my view it is also a measure of society, "i will do anything to make money and get my 15 mins of fame". I have just read a Linked in statement from a guy which also sums modern life up for many. "Money and status are important to me" That guy has a lot to learn. The Croc
I have little money and no status, Hey Ho. it`s a good job I`ve got a dog and a gun. Your not alone there Malantone, I see you have a Sprocker, the one in my avatar was a Sprocker, (Bruce)best dog and best mate I've ever had. Best wishes for your Grandson, and his mates and everyone else out there to come back safely As for Harry, good on the lad, wants to do what he's been trained for, and as for his off duty antics, so what, no different to any other bloke in uniform having a bit of fun. I have no money or status either but i'm happy, have a fab wife and daughter which money cannot buy ( well e-bay is tempting!!)
Canis
Whatever your personal feelings about Harry's posting let's just hope he, or any other person out there, doesn't get hurt or killed. No quite the reverse . The whole point of his 40million pound weapon platform that you and i have paid is that it should hurt or kill the dodgy little men with tea towels on their heads and the ( religion/oil) * that are trying to put harm in the way of the nice young men that work for his granny. Personally I think this was a great idea . I think the main problem with Harry going into combat /risking other s oldiers lives would be the issues that would occur if he was captured- and the necessity of expending the entirety of our special forces retreiving him. I would have thought that the possibility of capture was fairly small- if his apatche gets taken out of the sky i doubt he's expected to survive.Otherwise he's doing his bit. As far as i'm concerned the story could only be better if the war was with france
