  • 5 weeks later...

Was at the dinner on friday night but still not managed to get a full member to take me out on the marshes, not really that impressed with regards to the fact that its paid for shooting but I cant use it :(

Does your club not have a full list of committee members who are willing to take new members out? The clubs that I have belonged/belong to have, I would have thought in your new members pack they would be in there phone them up most are only to happy to help out new members etc.

They do but everyone seems to be booked up and theres only a few of them too which doesn't help, the issue was raised at dinner the other night but no solution as of yet

Oh right seems like they need to get a few established members on board to help with the new members hey good luck with your search I'm sure somebody will come up trumps buddy good luck.......

I feel i should point out that every associate member of MBWA gets three "day" tickets per season, each ticket runs for about six weeks and has to be used within the specified dates ? (not sure on the exact dates)

The usual situation is when a friend or relative wants to join the club, then they are proposed and seconded by full members, its their duty to escort the associate member on every visit until full membership which is approximately 7 to 8 years, then they go on a probationary members list for two years, thats the approximate time scale you will be looking at to get full membership.

With yours and some other applications you were not proposed or seconded therefore its harder to find a full member willing to take out a person they do not know.

I'm sure this was pointed out to you at your initial interview ?

The issue about new associate members was brought up on Friday evening at the Hotpot supper meeting, as you rightly pointed out, but as of yet (Sunday) i dont know if many full members have put their names forward who are willing to escort associate members they have not proposed or seconded out on any marshes/flights, im sure you will be informed in due time.

My advice would be to attend as many MBWA meetings, work parties, clay shoots etc as you can, that will be the best way to get to know people and increase your chances of finding someone willing to take you out, this season might be a difficult one, but be patient and and hopefully the committee will team you up with a full member who has some free time to take you out. It wont be sorted out over night, but things are in progress to to get the issue resolved.

Thats a "ballpark" figure, it could be less depending on the number of junior members taken on or the number of vacancies each year, but expect 7 to 8 years for full membership.

In the probationary two years you are still classed as full member.

Morecambe bay is classed as a "dead mans shoes" club, but with every passing season you are one step closer to getting full membership.

There are other clubs on the west coast that have longer waiting lists, i heard of one club that has a waiting list of between 20 to 25 years at the moment.

One should bear in mind all clubs have their individual motivations, which should be lead by the existing membership- i know the membership thoughts are very much at the forfront for the MBWA commitee . There are some far harder wildfowling clubs to get into on the North west coast of England demand is high here and the amount of shooting on the forshore is not that great for this demand . One should bear in mind that good things come to he who waits and also nothing worthwhile comes without some difficulty, just like when your out on a marsh to be fair

I didn't realise that it was like that up north but your quite right good things come to those who wait....

Hi mate yes I'm aware I have the three tickets to use and each runs for as you say around 6 weeks , the first ticket is up on the 30th of october I think or 31st.

My main point is not the wait for full membership it is the fact that I am 4 weeks into a ticket as is my friend and we are yet to set foot on the marshes, Richard was also meant to call us friday to confirm wether or not we would be taking a dawn flight on saturday and we never heard from him which was a bit annoying as we were looking forward to getting out but would have liked a reply either way as he said he would.

I did attend the hot pot dinner, didn't manage to make the clay shoot but didn't manage to find anyone there who was able to take us out for a shoot though. As I said above though, just a little gutted to have nearly used up an entire ticket with nothing to show for it, just a bit gutted really and it feels like a waste of money not being able to use something you paid for

its not a waste what is a waste is moaning about it look at it this way fella if you winge and moan no-one will want to take you out.....dont get me wrong i get that its annoying trust me i pay for full membership to at least one wildfowling club every year and as yet i havent been out and i wont be getting out until 18th December at the earliest due to being overseas with work.... so trust me fella you aint that hard done and it could be worse. just be very grateful that you were taken on as an associate member without anybody proposing you because someone will take you out sooner or later and after it has happened once if you pay attention and are thankful to the member word will get out and others would then be willing to take you out......your only waiting on the first person after that you will get lots of opportunities im sure

The situation in the North West is what it is and as demand outstrips supply this is the situation you end up in. I don't have a problem with that Shooting and Wildfowling in particular is finite. I'd be interested however in what an Associate Member of MBWA is expected to pay as an annual sub. If it is anywhere near what a Full Member pays then perhaps the Club has a duty to ensure Members get support during their initial season with the Club or doesn't take on Members without a Proposer and Seconder.

I can understand your frustration as I know the new memebers I have taken out this season (One is Big Mat) have been very keen to get out there and when I first joined many years ago I was just as keen (and still am). In the club I am in its compulsary to complete a minimum of six flights with a full member of the club, but its left to me (as I proposed the memebership) to say if they are ready to be left to go it alone after the six flights. The lads completed the flights after maybe 2 weeks. But they have decided that its still best to come with me for at least the rest of this season, I agreed they could only go certain places unaccompanied.

I do not want to get into the politics of your chosen club and wont take sides as I may not know all the details but I will say if the club are willing to accept your membership they should help you as much as they can to get a member or someone to how you around as soon as possible. But people do have othe commitments and you will have to appreciate that too. You should be proactive in getting help to get out there but be patient at the same time. And personally I dont think a forum is the correct way to air your views on this matter. You should be asking the club officials their thoughts. Its not the best thing hanging out your diry washing in public view.

Hope you soon get out on the marsh, best of luck to you when you finally get your chance.
