Matty7247
Morning all, I just want to know what your views are on paying for a goose guide. Im relatively new to Wildfowling, having spent last season travelling to the Scottish Coast, and although i didnt bag anything, enjoyed myself. So, i was pondering whether it is actually worth sometimes paying out? Have any off you paid for a guide, and what did you think. Cheers, Matt
cumbrian top shot
Hi Matt, Do your homework on the guides first ie look on websites and ask around even phone a few there are plenty to choose from up in scotland, there will be some chancers out there that are more than happy to take your hard earned cash but there is some good one's aswell. The majority in north east scotland nearly all offer inland decoying but there is bound to be some that offer foreshore flighting if that's what you want to do, I have heard of some that operate on the solway that will take you out on the foreshore, just do a search on google for solway shooting. We have had some fantastic shooting in and around Aberdeenshire but all inland and the odd flight of an evening, but one thing to remember is as you know geese are wild birds and none of the guides offer guarantee's but they will certainly try an get you under them. There is bound to be some lads on here who have had good flights with guides and some who feel they have been ripped off. Good luck with it and hope you get under some with who ever you go with. CTS. Matty7247
Thanks for the reply, it was more hyperthetical really, i enjoy going on the foreshore, and taking my chances. I have heard some horror stories about people being ripped off, so i think ill just keep an eye out for any PW members offering some up. tomaddy525
I do the annual pilgrimage to the solway every october mate, same place every year! All i can recomend is find somewhere you like to stay close to the solway, get out on the marsh and hope for the best the first year! Look and learn, try to take in as much as possible about where the geese go and roost and so on, watch where all the other laddies go! they wont be going there if they dont know thats where the geese go! then just go baack to the same grounds year on year and after a couple of times you should know exactly where to go, then its just up to the geese! first couple of times i made notes so i could remember what had happened the next time! e.g this year im going to the same small cottage that i have done for the last 8 years (!!!!!), same grounds - brow well up to caerlaverock - and hopefully the same creek as last year ( unless ssome other bugg*r beats me to it)! salmon fishing in the day time, geese on mornings ducks on evenings pub at night time and then do it all over again! i go up on a saturday, go out on the sunday to see where stuff goes and then take a chance on the monday morning and then just see how things work out, and then dont miss!! Good luck to you pal, if you need any more info on specifics pm me! but to answer the question, guides can only take you to where they THINK the geese will flight over, no definates, so i wouldnt bother! Matty7247
I go camping to the Solway, i have a nice little area, camping/Shooting. As for people, i can honestly say i have never seen anyone else whilst i have been up there. Last year we saw plenty of Duck, and a few small skeins of Geese, and i really enjoyed it. Thanks for offering advice, appreciate that, and will bear you in mind. You never know, may see you up there. Matt

Matty7247
We have been to the Caverlock reserve, found there to be too many Barny's Knocking about, so we just hop along the coast? As we camp, we are kind of free range??
tomaddy525
walk out from brow well to the marsh, and walk towards east along the shore for about a mile, over the bigish creek that comes from ruthwell and pop in there somewhere, then you should see some geese! pavman
Matty A guide is a very good idea when you are new to fowling or dont know the location even more so when its tidal fowling and or on mud flats there is no stigma in learning with a good mentor and by the time you work it out for yourself it could cost a lot more than a guide will charge you. Use the BASC list and you wont go far wrong, despite being experienced i would not hesitate to use a guide on new ground as you cant beat local knowleadge .... good luck Edited September 26, 2012 by pavman
