gibspoon
I wonder if anyone can give me a heads up on this, as I've never spent a day on pigeons, and I generally rough shoot. One of my permissions has some trees that are used to roost. I've tried to get up on them several times now, at the same roost, resulting in only one bird. I under-estimated how difficult it would be to get close enough to take a decent shot. Got to be a good fieldcraft exercise though! If I keep trying, am I likely to put them off using the area to roost, or are they more resilient than that? Cheers!
Actionpigeons
Get there before them is what you need to do.
Davyo
As prev said .get there before them, i usually get settled at least 1hr before the birds come.Let a few land then shoot as the rest as they come in, they will lift but within 5-10 mins they will be back.At my roost they usually came back about 15 to 20 times before the message sinks in, I THEN LEAVE IT FOR 2 WEEKS BEFORE GOING BACK. I alternate between 2 woods.DEC though to end of MARCH, usually best as there can be a couple of hundred birds dropping in. aga man
a face veil is always good and look for the trees with plenty of droppings under them. pigeons often prefer a particular tree. as davyo says don't over shoot it if you have a good do then rest it for a while. mr salt
look for where there is bird poo . stand there. the more you get to know where you shoot ,you will get the hang of how much difference wind direction plays to where they land. as the others have said dont over shoot and get there before they do.(2.30pm -3.30 pm this time of year in the east) stay still do not move. cover everything in dull clothes, you not need to spend loads on camo. gibspoon
Thanks for the tips folks, ready for another bash again at the weekend. As for camo, its surplus German Flecktarn all the way at this time of year. Cheap as chips and a good autumn pattern. (Christ, it IS the weekend! I'm losing track of the days because of shift work) Edited November 10, 2012 by gibspoon
