Id love a defender but dont have the money to buy one let alone insure it.

Any comments appreciated,

I have the LWB and would go for the SWB if I had any less gear to cart about. However the smaller motors are petrol and therefore more costly to run.

It has 120+ K on the clock and I`ve had it the last 45K the only prob I had was a starter motor went within 6 months of buying it.

I like it and as yet haven`t got stuck, but I keep hitting the stabiliser plate now and again

I've had two Defenders, both 300tdi if you are keen enough to have read into them. An M reg 90 hardtop, and an R reg 110 pickup. Trust me, the insurance is the cheap bit! I have a Mitsubishi L200 4Life now, not as solid, but cheap(er) to run, and more comfortable. Never got it stuck yet. Try an older nissan patrol, or toyota land cruiser. I'm not sure what the insurance would be like, but they are cheaper to buy than the landy. Toyota hilux or Mitsubishi L200 pickups are good too if you don't need many seats, and with commercial insurance, may be a cheaper option for you. Also great to shoot off of! The Suzuki is ok, but gets stuck in tractor ruts quite easily. The engines aren't up to tough off roading either. If it's just grass fields though, they are plenty good enough, I've actually heard of one getting over some soft mud that a landy got stuck in because of its weight!! Good luck finding something cheap to insure

Hi Alex,

i was in the same boat.. Wanted a defender and couldnt afford one so bought a swb hard top vitara jx on an r plate for £1000. Ive had it for 4 months and although its a basic little waggon ive never got stuck in it and find it reasonable on fuel if kept to around 60mph. spares are reasonably cheap although 2 new rear tyres cost £70 each :drinks: but they were good years. I get around 200-230 miles on £30 of petrol. The rear seats are also really easy to take out and its brilliant for shooting from as the wing mirror when wrapped with an old blanket is just right for resting my rimmie/hmr on

If you want to go anywhere and cheaply get a sj410/413 or the first of the jimny`s,and I do mean anywhere.

the jimny is a no no as the front axel is **** its like a landrover but worse and the axel costs 700 quid new

sj 410 413 noo way they are dated and slow and poo but cant fault them off road
