deeksofdoom
Before any one says go to a gunsmith, I intend to just looking for some opinions. Recently bought a cheap semi-automatic to do a bit of pigeon shooting, noticed after bringing it home the breech is well pitted, is it safe to shoot? JJsDad
If its so badly pitted its out of proof and unsafe; someones committed an offence selling it to you in the first place. While you have done your best with the photo`s I personally wouldnt want to answer your question without actually viewing the depth of the pitting myself. Take it to a practical gunsmith and seek his advice.

scarecrow243
Hi looking at the pics it looks like carbon build up with not getting a good clean, give it a good scrub ps if thats a beretta barrel it should not be pitting
bedwards1966
It does look like it's possibly just very mucky, I'd give it a good soak and a scrub with a wire brush before going any further. If it is pitting, I'd guess that it's likely to be OK, however DO NOT take my word for it, as it's not possible to tell accurately by looking at photo's. Even then, I'm not a gunsmith. Take it to a gunshop, they'll be able to tell you if it's safe, and they can measure it and tell you if it's in proof or not. I think it's very rare for pitting to be deep enough to actually be dangerous, but it's better to be safe than sorry. At the worst, you may only be able to safely use it for 'normal' cartridges (i.e not heavy magnum loads with high pressures). If it's found to be out of proof when measured, I'd take it back to the person you've bought it from as they've committed an offence selling it to you. They can give it away, but not sell it. Catweazle
I had an AL390 Silver Mallard that looked like that, it used to scuff up the cases when they were ejected but it worked fine. I wasn't happy about it though, so I took it back and got a refund. It was from a reputable shop, so I didn't even bother taking it to bits in the shop, lesson learned there.
