October stubbles

I saw a huge number of pigeons feeding on some barley stubbles in the week. I watched briefly on Wednesday and Thursday but was unable to shoot on either day. The farmer called me on Friday to say that he had seen 500 which was my estimate exactly.

Today dawned foggy and my optimism waned. I turned up at the farm which is on a high plateau at 11:15 and the fog was so thick I couldn't see more that 50m. I hung around and miraculously at 12:30 the fog lifted and there were birds in the air immediately. My position was pre chosen based on the flight lines I had seen in the week. I know that this is the wrong way to go about things but I felt that in this case it would be right.

My set up was simple, the rotary close in and two arms of a mixture of dead birds on spikes and shell decoys. I would say that only 20% of birds which flew over the field decoyed, but others, which had no intention of decoying, flew by within 50m and presented some long crossing shots.

The last hour of the day was spent searching the hedgerows for birds which I had seen fly off injured and I managed to add 8 birds to the bag by doing this.

I picked 146 pigeons and 5 carrion crows. The farmer has just texted me for the score and was delighted that I got so many.
