Targa notebook

Despite what anyone will tell you there are only a handfull of notebook manufacturers in the world, and yes you have guessed it they are all in China. Companies you have never heard of like Invetec, Compal, etc make them. The big boys buy from them make a few mods and then get their badge stuck on the front, so when you tear them apart you may find a lot of parts are actually interchangable between different manfacturers.

Having said all that, I wouldn't go too far from away from a household names in a notebook, just for the aftersales support.

I could reveal far more than I want to here :good: but I will say that companies do give aftersales support on really **** products - do you think they will still be trading in 3 years time? (assuming you still have the notebook then)

The warranty will be return to bench, so if you get any hardware problems you will have to send it away for repair, almost certainly abroad.

But f you like the look/feel of it go for it, I am assuming they are dirt cheap?

Id just like to point something out...I work for the John Lewis Department stores on the Electrical department. All the notebook manufacturers we deal with have their aftersales/repairs based abroad. Its a sad fact, but its true....All the big name brands including Sony, HP, Toshiba etc. Hp make you send goods to Germany for repair, and Sony make you send them to Paris. I think Dell send all their goods to Ireland for repair...Its not up to us as a retailer....its what the manufacturers say. And they usually like to take their time about repairing stuff too :-/ it can take anything from 2 days to 2 months!

Sad but very true.

If it is an important notebook most decent manufacturers will let you upgrade the warranty to onsite repair i.e. you get a bloke + some parts come out to you (for corporate models at least) for a price of course :good:

It may be worth adding that almost all repair centres, by default, wipe the hard drive as part of their troubleshooting as well - nice eh

If it was me looking for a New Notebook/Laptop, I would be very tempted to go with Dell.

They are reliable and their prices seem very good.

Yes they are built in Ireland and they are a very organised company.

They also use various companies to carry out their Warranty work for them, so you should be well looked after.

Toshiba and Compaq (HP) are also good manufacturers, and they all do some very nice wide screen models at present, which do look nice...take a look at PC World for the difference in these...

Yeah Dell, Sony, Toshiba, HP are all good makes. Like u said, its probably a good idea to get the onsite agreement......btw with HP they officially try not to format your hard drive unless they absolutely have to. Ive seen customers computers go out and have a motherboard/CPU replaced but the documents still intact....but I would always keep data etc backed up because you never know....
