Gordon R
The colour of smoke is usually the clue. Blue smoke is normally blown head gasket or worn valve seals. Black smoke - diesel injection timing. White smoke - blown head gasket or water in the diesel. I had a TDi a few years ago. Difficult to start and masses of smoke - it looked whitish. Turned out to be water in fuel filter. Cleaned the fuel filter - problem sorted.
al4x
If its struggling to start then that would suggest head gasket as well due to low compression.
