Renault Meganne Idle problems

Hi Everyone

I have been kindly given a 2.0 petrol Renault Megane from the parents its on a 53 plate it recently had a new cam belt and water pump and has now developed a fault. It sometimes struggles to start but always eventually does, also have the problem that it does not idle. When you take your foot off the acclerator it revs just drop and drop steadily like it should be then just carry on dropping and the engine cuts out, its like it just doesnt even know its got a point to idle. It does not happen every time I drive and it can sort itself out while driving as well or randomly start. It drives perfectly in every other way and isnt to much of a problem apart from have to keep my foot on the throttle at traffic lights etc. Has anyone got any ideas what it might be?

Thanks, Tom

hi,suggest you check cam timing or crank sensor the timing could be out one tooth eitherway how did it run before cambelt change? as i said advise check cam timing hope this works.

Had a pal with one that did the same thing or remarkably similar - it was the crank sensor. IIRC it was cheap(ish), and a simple job too. Diagnosed with a cheapo box from the bay, so Andypaint has the way forward!

Thanks everyone, it was perfect before it went for the work. The people who did the belt are looking at it for me next week but i think it might be the throttle sensor as its an intermitant fault and found to stop it you just rev it hard for a couple of seconds. I think might of been upset by them doing the work if you know what i mean. Thanks for the app idea as well i will have a look asap.
