Dedicated "FOX" Rifle

For example:-

"22 for rabbits and .223 for a dedicated fox rifle".....

I have seen this term banded about a lot and I just don't get it!

I don't know what it means, and it sounds very restrictive.

Any given calibre can only ever have a limited use dictated by various physical factors, so what is the .223 dedicated to for foxes? Open field with medium range? Certainly close range in restricted environments smaller calibres come into their own and from 250-300 yards I would be looking at a bigger calibre!

So, does this imply "I only shoot foxes with it (NO OTHER ANIMALS) and between about 80-200 yards"?

I'd be interested to hear your interpretation. thumbs.gif

It gets bandied about by those without one as they think its what licensing want to hear IMHO

I think the confusion comes with when specifying a need for a centerfire people say dedicated when they actually mean to just give foxing as the reason to aquire. I've always put pest control on mine and have had both fox and pests on my ticket and then on renewal simply pest control whichever way I don't tend to be fussy what pests get shot if i'm holding that rifle

To clarify, its how some areas classify your rifles. For instance lets say you have a 30-06 granted for deer as your "good reason" then you want to add fox to that gun they might well add it BUT if you loose your stalking then you will be forced to loose the 30-06. Its like the classic .243 win for fox and deer thats fine with many areas if it cuts the number of firearms someone holds BUT its not quite as easy to get a "dedicated" .243 win foxer. I have in fact two reasons to posses my .243 win they class it as my "dedicated" fox rifle and my "dedicated" deer rifle. Does the actuall word appear on my cert? no but speak to licencing and it very much exists in thier notes and the term is used in conversation with them. I might point out that until i sold all my heavier calibres they also had fox on them but not as my dedicated fox rifles.

To make all this clear as mud you can also get a dedicated fox and vermin gun here, this place being taken by the Hornet. I was actually told at a previous renewal that if i bought say a .223 or 22-250 they would take the .243 off as my dedicated fox gun.

we all know its a postcode lottery and the laws are not applied equally accross our land and many rules are often made up by some fool sat behind his desk in the area HQ- this is but another example!

I asked for a .222 for vermin fox and deer

still came back with "fox and deer" only

some forces that don't deal with AOLQ will always condition for the largest

I have an email from my force saying in essence "if you want to shoot crows with your .243 and foxes with your .270 there is nothing to stop you, so long as that is not the primary reason for ownership"

It's this dedicated business people spout off about I'm not understanding.

...and following on from this, does anyone actually have ANY rifle listed solely for ONE quarry species...For Example the FAC states....... "The .223 shall be used only/solely for Fox control"..... or specific words restricting it for one species.

None of my conditions have EVER been that specific, and they now ALL contain the phrase ...ANY OTHER LAWFUL QUARRY, perhaps this is why I have no concept of this DEDICATED term? hmm.gif

Its simply the postcode licensing lottery no more no less, thier terms, thier words, thier conditions. I have tried Lawfull quarry not a chance in heck. Yes i actually have "all lawfull quarry" on some of my guns by default of them listing the sepparate uses- its that mad
