colin lad
I thought all .17HMR ammo were ballistic tips. you can get 17 and 20grain hollow points as well though the ballistics tips are better just my opinion though mate colin
Thunderbird
Many people think the ballistic tips are better due to accuracy and also less meat damage, the latter not being an issue on foxes. I can attest to the fact that CCI 20 grain hollow point in HMR are very effective on foxes.

JonathanL
I thought all .17HMR ammo were ballistic tips. The phrase only applies to bullets made by Hornady. There are lots of types of .17 ammuntion which do not incorporate Hornady Ballistic Tip bullets. J.

What exactly are you referring to when you say a standard .17 shell? Some barrels prefer some types/weights/manufacturers of ammo, but once a HMR barrel is run in you will find VERY little difference in performance of all the branded names of 17g V-Max. Just the same, ANY change of ammo should be accompanied by a zeroing shot (or more) before you let lose on anything live!

1in9
ANY change of ammo should be accompanied by a zeroing shot (or more) before you let lose on anything live! Amen. However I found the point of impact difference between CCi 20gn gamepoints and Hornady 17gn V-max to be less than an inch on my CZ, so still within kill zone at a push. No substitute for a proper rezero though.
T-Bolt94
The trajectory of .17hmr rounds is fairly flat so I can't imagine there being a major difference in round type. However, as mentioned some barrels do prefer one brand/type over another. I like to use a mixture of Ballistic Tipped and Hollow Point of different brands and weight so what I did was when zeroing it I used 3 of each round type and found that its fairly well zeroed for them all.
