.17 HMR Ballistic Tips info required?

Many people think the ballistic tips are better due to accuracy and also less meat damage, the latter not being an issue on foxes.

I can attest to the fact that CCI 20 grain hollow point in HMR are very effective on foxes.

have not tried them on fox i got some 20s thinking i would get less meat damage on rabbits but found they still messed them up but as for accuracy i found them ok just not quite as good as ballistic tips but they were still usable

:hmm: My son has an CZ 452 .17 HMR,as he has started using Ballistic tips for foxes and has not used the rifle for anything else, would he have to re-zero if he wanted to use a standard .17 shell?Any help from you guys would be appreciated. ???

What exactly are you referring to when you say a standard .17 shell?

Some barrels prefer some types/weights/manufacturers of ammo, but once a HMR barrel is run in you will find VERY little difference in performance of all the branded names of 17g V-Max.

Just the same, ANY change of ammo should be accompanied by a zeroing shot (or more) before you let lose on anything live! :good:

Amen. However I found the point of impact difference between CCi 20gn gamepoints and Hornady 17gn V-max to be less than an inch on my CZ, so still within kill zone at a push. No substitute for a proper rezero though.

The trajectory of .17hmr rounds is fairly flat so I can't imagine there being a major difference in round type. However, as mentioned some barrels do prefer one brand/type over another. I like to use a mixture of Ballistic Tipped and Hollow Point of different brands and weight so what I did was when zeroing it I used 3 of each round type and found that its fairly well zeroed for them all.
