altnipper
Hi does anyone know of any shooting grounds around Gloucester area that I can teach my sister to shoot at? I know a lot of grounds don't allow non staff tuition. I've been shooting a long time and I've had loads of lessons so know the score, mainly I want to make sure she's going to be safe. Thanks

robbiep
The problem is that the ground has no idea if you are good enough to be instructing a novice in handling a gun. You may have been shooting a long time, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. My granny has been driving a hell of a long time, and she's a menace. That is why most grounds insist on a non-certificate holder having an instructed lesson to start with.
HDAV
Book her a lesson somewhere good with a good instructor and accompany her, if they suggest she is safe perhaps you can go on from there accompanying her this is the system they operate at treetops just over the Severn in Newport if Andrew thinks you are both safe then you can take her round for " practice" but only after they are happy with the safety aspect and let's be honest if anybody turned at your shoot would you let them loose? And being a good shot does not mean a good instructor I bought my mum and dad and sister a lesson which they really enjoyed and was better for me not teaching ! Chris B123
Have a word with Steve Nutbeam at Longridge shooting ground near Ledbury. It would be best for her to have at least half an hour with the ground staff just to satisfy them they are safe at there ground.

That is why most grounds insist on a non-certificate holder having an instructed lesson to start with. The problem with that idea though is that there is no requirement to know much about safe handling of a shotgun with a certificate either. I've seen some very scary stuff being done by people who've probably been shooting 20 years. I will say this, having worked on oil rigs which are pretty dangerous places it's very rare that an accident happens when something non-routine is being done. People tend to be careful when they are doing something out of the ordinary; learning to shoot for example. In contrast most accidents are usually falling down stairs, crossing a road, driving to work etc something we do every day of our lives and we become complacent about. I agree though, go down the lessons route, she will form habits from the safe practices taught to her by a coach.
