Had an invite to a mates flight pond tonight, it turned out to be a unbelieveable flight as we counted 27 duck in alas all 27 were Manderine :w00t: , I have never even seen one in the wild before, beautiful birds to look at but a waste of barley for my mate. We fired a couple of shots to try and scare them off, I can only hope for his sake they move on.

We get a lot down this way. Last season there over 40 using a lake on one of the estates I pick up on. Most weeks if I do an inland flight I see one or two. Luckily they are quite vocal as they arrive giving away their identity

I guess they must be spreading, its a strange little noise they make, my mate reckons the pond used to be good for mallard until the mandarin turned up, but I would have thought mallard being larger would not have been bullied. Perhaps one day they will be on the species list. :good:

Can you not shoot them ? are they migratory or have they been released or escaped and then bread? I cant say I have ever seen one. I am going to google them now.

Not allowed to shoot them BBL, I would have thought they have spread to the area from birds that have at sometime in the past escaped from private collections.

Thanks for that Terry, I just found them on Google and below is an extract from the BBC Nature wep pages. A very nice looking bird though

Mandarin ducks in Britain are the descendants of captive-bred ducks which escaped or were deliberately released. Mandarins are one of the few duck species which are not hunted for food - apparently they taste really bad!
