Ferret Master
Hi, When out rabbiting with my 20 bore with a rabbit load of 28g's of 6's in the chamber's the fox is known to make an appearance. I'm not happy taking him with this cartridge unless quite close and would like to have some heavier larger 20 bore carts in another pocket for such an instance. Currently I have a couple of 28g's of 5's but want something with more punch. I doubt many are made as there is little market for them as surely any sane person would just use a 12 bore... My beretta silver pigeon is chambered for 3'' magnum cartridges and it is a case of finding the right weight or cartridge and shot size to give a good killing pattern on a fox at close to medium range. I'm not bothered about how loud or hard recoiling they are, they just need to kill large fox like things. I'm using the fixed 1/4 and 1/2 choke so long shots are definitely not an option. Obviously if we had set out specially foxing Dad would have the 12 bore with 36g of BB's in each barrel. If anybody knows of any suitable cartridges then please share your wealth of knowledge. Ferret Master
I'll google the names, thanks. ........... .............I just googled it and found on the 'just cartridges' website that Eley Alphamax cartridges exist in 20 bore in a 32g load and are available in BB's SG or AAA. And are fibre wad which I prefer. I'm going to get some BB's. However as beatingisbest just pointed out to me on msn now that I have these carts I will never see another fox with them in my pocket. HERE THEY ARE! FM
Baldrick
FM, you are in for a rough time if you fire 32g Alphamaxes out of your 20bore. I have tried the very same cartridges in the same gun. Big mistake. Even if the gun fits you like a glove, the recoil is pretty unpleasant. Ferret Master
I expect it to be. I also expect it to be far from pleasant for the fox that I have drawn a bead up on. FM
njc110381
I just looked at the site, loads on there. I can't see whats wrong with firing a large load through a light gun like your 20. As you say, it's going to be a rare thing anyway. What's this 46g 12 bore cartridge on there about? Looks painful to me! I assume another that you wouldn't want to fire too many of? Good luck with the fox by the way, hope you get him without getting too knocked about yourself!
Ferret Master
Thanks. I believe they sell 53g shells on there in size 0 shot. FM
njc110381
After reading through it, I've just found a 56g 12 bore cartridge. Must be like firing a cannon
