WV. Quick Question

I have a 2005 1600 Golf which has about 9000 kilometers on the clock. It drives as it should , but lately , and only when the engine is cold , when starting it makes a loud noise for a couple of seconds , a noise that can only be discribed like shaking a bucket of nails . Trouble is it does,nt do it all the time which makes it difficult to detect when taking it to a garage.I have changed the oil , but it made no difference.

My question is - as I have lost the manual - does it have a timing chain , or a belt , and if a timing chain could that be the cause of the loud noise I get when stating the engine from cold.?

Any ideas would be much apprechiated , as I am at a lose.

Anthony.

It,s 90000 and not 9000.Sorry.

New set of buckets, may be a cam, what service history does it have? Vw are usually very good sounds a bit early for that sort of work

The thing is , I had the car from new , and in fact this is the 4th WV I had in the last 20 years , as I always thought they are very reliable , and it never missed a service. Well, thank you all for your suggestions , I,should know by next week as I have arranged to take it in the main agency . Hope not a Bank buster.!!

Well after visiting the main dealers and a couple of local garages , it was pronounced that the couse of the loud noise is the timing chain playing up. Well here comes the funny part. The main dealers quated about 1500 euro , one of the local garages about 600 euro , and the third one suggested I should forget all-about it , and wait till the noise can be heard EVERY time I start the engine . I think I.ll probably do just ,and hope it will not lead to a major catastrophe.!! Thank you all for your suggestions.
