is it just me or does the population of crows seem to grow more and more every day speaking to a farmer yesterday he is drilling barley at mo. He needs me to go over the weekend and try and get rid of some. I have noticed pigeons are no longer the problem bloody blackies every where any one else got problems.

i've just got back from shooting and one of the recently ploughed fields had about 50 crows on it but it often has over a hundred on it and the farmer wants me to get rid off a many as possible but the trouble is they're difficult to shoot as once a couple of shots have been fired they clear off to other fields and don't come back untill i've gone

Have you tried baiting with a slit open rabbit. Lay it belly up with the guts out and they spot it from miles away! I've noticed a lot on my shoot recently, but hitting them with an air rifle is really hard because they usually spot me before I've had chance to aim.

I'm having problems on my shoot with them as well, they are feeding on the open face of the silage clamp as well as the feed trough outside the dairy and sh*tting everywhere !!!! The farmer has a gas gun out all the time but the only thing that has managed to do is upset the neighbours. We are trying to find out where the roost is at the moment and then see if we can get permission to shoot them at dusk when they come back in. If we can get a few over the winter then get on top of the branchers next spring it should make a bit of a dent in the population

Rooks NOT Crows! Real problem as very few people bother to shoot them anymore. Livestock farmers hate them as they mess in the feed and water troughs.

However the best way we've found to really make a hole in their numbers is at their roosts when the leaves are off the trees. On the right day they'll not leave the roost but keep flying around the tree tops and occasionally landing on their nests. Not easy to hit but if you can you should get a good bag. Do that on a regular basis and they'll either push off for good or you'll make such a hole in their numbers they'll no longer be such a pest.

Rooks not Crows and if you don't know the difference your on the wrong forum! :good:

I shoot crows on an outdoor pig unit where there is a vast flock of crows rooks and jackdaws all flying and feeding together. We've been shooting them all year and have had about 150 down in the last few sessions but there is no noticeable decline in numbers. The flock is still 400+ strong.

CharlieT...rooks in numbers crows in singles, pairs and sometimes threes.

Tolley by the looks of those photos them thar's rooks and rooks don't kill songbirds!

Rooks (adult birds) have a bare whiteish patch at the base (head end) of their beaks. Crows are ALL black. At this time of year young rooks may not have developed the whiteish base to the beak and it may appear that you've shot a lot of crows but you ain't! Good shooting though.

Shootin' rooks is (relatively) easy compared to shootin' wily old crows. Most (not all but most) crows that get shot over deeks are young silly boogers.
