Moors Man
My father has a Freelander 2 on a 58 plate. It has now done 38,000 miles and he is nearly ready for its 3rd set of tyres. There is no problem with the tracking or tyre pressure as the wear appears even and the LR dealer has checked the tracking. The original Goodyear lasted about 19,000 and it has Bridgestones on at present. There are road tyres. This seems really low to me as my Disco 2 has done 30,000 on a set of Grabbers AT2 and are hardly showing signs of wear which is similar to the BFG ATs I have on my previous 1999 L200. Are Freelanders this hard on tyres or could anyone suggest a more high mileage trye. the size is 235/65 x 17 incase that make a difference. Thanks
neil3728
That does seem a little low on the milage I've just changed my tyres for the first time at 30,000, after 18 months. These came from the factory as standard Can't remember what the tyres were but the Garage has just put wrangler 4x4 contact tyres on. What FL2 do you have, the TD4 or SD4. al4x
you can't really compare the two types of tyre, the grabberts and BFG's are exceptional with how long they last, more road orientated tyres can be far less but depend on how the vehicle is driven. He would have to change tyre size if he went for grabbers but might be worth it if he intends keeping the vehicle long.
steve_b_wales
General Grabber now do an AT tyre for the Freelander 2 (235x65xR17)
MJN
I've done 23k on mine OEM tyres on my Freely2 XS with approx 10k left. all down to how you drive and what type of roads you drive on. for me I'm not slow and mostly back country roads. on the disco I also used to get 30k ish per set. Moors Man
It does sound like there is something wrong. At 79 he is no boy racer, and there are quite a few decent length journeys as they are going places.
al4x
If the wear is even its a sign that it is simply down to the compound of tyre fitted to the vehicle. Any problems would manifest themselves in uneven wear, best option is fit something else tyre wise when he next needs to change them. BRYAN3
MOORS MAN. It might be worth checking out the vcu. If it is anything like FL1,they tend to seize-up causing transmission wind-up. Look at the front tyres and see if the treads are developing a saw tooth shape looking from the side. Mine went this way and I removed the whole propshaft. Moors Man
He has spoke to his local LR dealer who recon that 10 to 12 k per set is about right I think it might be on its way soon.
