longnetter
On one of my permissions the farmer has ten thousand chickens in big sheds, they are allowed outside access if they want it, but only a small percentage bother to go outdoors! These seem slightly different in their attitudes to the majority although they are all the same breed. I was leaning on the fence post watching them on Sunday afternoon and they were in little cliques of half a dozen or so, suddenly a rabbit hopped under the fence, and then another joined it! The nearest bunch of chickens ran at them and seemed to mob the two bunnies and soon saw them off! Is there a chicken fancier on here who could tell me if this is a common occurrence? I will certainly think twice in future before calling someone a 'chicken' these chickens were hard enough to get in to the SAS I reckon! Lord Geordie
I think you will find it's a terratorial thing!! Also i have seen chickens attack other chickens with blood on their backside till the chicken dies if they are not stopped. They can be Vicious litle so and so's when they want to be. Foxer
Yeah chickens can be suprisingly nasty, we have had about 3-4 ducks killed by them in the last year or so.
Ferret Master
One of our chickens, now dead from fox attack, was attacking a fox cub and creating a racket when it was inspecting their cages with chicks in. She was launching herself at the cage and creating enough noise to protect her ducklings. As for rabbits, I have shot a few in our chicken pens. Ferret Master
Bantam's make better mother's than ducks so we just pop the duck/goose eggs under a broody hen. FM
