JBS
I've just got a pair of the Howard leights, I was surprised when using them how little they affect my shooting, I was expecting to notice them knocking the stock but I don't. Only problem for me is after approx 4 hours in the hide they were getting uncomfortable and I started to notice how they were pinching my ears, I don't think I have particularly big ears either! Gunnerbob
Use ear plugs as I find ear muffs uncomfortable with my specs.
steve_b_wales
You've got me fancying a pair of these Is about £40 delivered from the USA the best price or should I be looking elsewhere Mine were approx £54 from ebay. You could order from the USA, and maybe your package will not be grabbed by the customs officers, where you'll end up paying more than they are in the UK. Buying from the UK gives peace of mind, and if anything goes wrong with them, at least you can return them to a UK dealer.

Spud dog
Just being to get moulds done for set of ACS custom valve. My view is you only get one set of ears. Intersting chat to hearing specialist is that gun shots damage the same area that we need to hear speech. Another bonus she was tidy!! looking forward to getting them back in a few weeks after had ears syringed.
aris
Anyone used Peltor Shotgunners passive protection?
apache
I have some CENS digital and they are excellent - ears don't get sweaty if warm (like with the muffs). I also had to Peltor electronic ones that were good, but quite bulky.
aris
Is there any extra hearing protection to be had from the electronic versions as opposed to passive. Basically is the only difference between the two that you don't need to remove the headset to hear people speaking and other than that they provide equal ear protection? I'm looking at the ear-muffs which completely cover the ear.
SakoQuad
Passive protectors all diminish your ability to hear other sounds, some by a lot! Kit like the ACS Sonics are not as bad as say foam ear plugs or over the ear ear-muffs but still reduce your hearing ability a bit. The electronic kit doesn't do this so you can hear conversation, birds taking flight etc easily, many of them can even amplify ordinary sound for you if you want, but then shut down when a shot is fired to completely protect your hearing for the duration of the "bang". Over the ear electronics are getting a lot cheaper but some are bulky and get in the way of the stock. In ear electronic kit remains eye wateringly expensive in general but worth every penny in my opinion.
aris
My main concern is with the quality of protection. Are they equal?
SakoQuad
the answer to that question is no they are not all equal. This is where you might need to use Google and look at the tech details for any ear defenders you might be interested in. Research findings I have come across concluded that moulded in ear plugs (ACS Sonics, Emtech Noise Breakers, CENS etc) perform, in reality, as well as they are said to do in the lab. They are for most people the most comfortable to wear for extended periods as well. Over ear "cans'" effectiveness can be compromised if you wear specs and, especially in summer feel hot / uncomfortable for some people. There is also the issue that the slimmer they are the less effective they can be BUT for shooters the thicker they are the more likely they are get in the way of the gun stock. This applies to passive and electronic versions. Sound attenuation varies, if my memory serves me right, between 23 db and 30 db as a rule and I am sure I came across some that were as high as 40 db but can't remember what they were. As a rule, the thicker ones having the higher the attenuation. The Napier pro 9 & 10 are different as they are not effected by specs and don't make your ears hot in summer so remain more comfortable (for me and others I know anyway). I use a pair of pro 10's as a spare to my ACS Sonics while I continue to save for a set of CENS!!!!
