adamskiseal
FAC HELP Hi there, I have recently been asked by a farmer if I could take care of a few problems for him, I already shoot rabbits on his land with a .22 rifle but he has asked me if I could bring his fox numbers down, (this is where you guys come in) I have half filled out my FAC and just need to put down what rifles to apply for, really I would like something for the rabbits and fox’s as that’s what I have been asked to deal with, but not to sure what the best caliber is to go for, I was thinking of putting down .22lr for the bunnies and .223 for the Charlie’s? It would be a great help to get your opinion, also how much ammunition to buy and hold. Thanks in advance. Adam
bedwards1966
A .22lr is one of the best rabbit calibers out there, it is cheap, quiet (use subsonic ammo) and easy to shoot to 70 yards, with practice it can be pushed a little further. Ask to buy 1000 hold 1400. A .17HMR can also be a good choice, it can be used to around 150 yards and has less danger of ricochet (a major problem on hard or stony land with the .22lr). The downside is the noise and the cost of the ammo is far more. Ask to buy 500 hold 700. A .223 is a great fox rifle and covers most foxing very well. It is a common round with a good range of affordable ammunition, it is hard to go wrong with it. Ask to buy 200 and to hold 400 The ammo allowances are very rough, some forces get a bit silly on them and will try to knock them down, don't let them take it too low. adamskiseal
Thank's for your response, do i have to put down that i would like the guns moderated? Adam
bedwards1966
Yes, moderators are classed as a firearm and must be put down for each rifle. If they ask why (which can occasionally happen) tell them it is for health and safety (damaging to your hearing by firing an unmoderated rifle, and not safe to wear ear protection on land) and so that pests don't scatter after your first shot. They shouldn't ask though.
The Essex Hunter
Adam Any of the c/fires will do what you ask of them, it is the future you should consider because things change and opportunities arise….shooting foxes for one farmer is what you will be doing this year then some one mentions deer! You have a .22 for the rabbits which in my opinion is spot on as they can be made very quiet and made for shooting rabbits. Good field craft and a quiet rifle will take care of them. Shooting rabbits with a c/fire is expensive and loud (good fun mind you) a .243 will do for the foxes and when things change you will have a rifle to cover most of what can be shot in the UK. Dekers
We live in a strange world, especially where firearms are concerned. Yes, future proofing may be a consideration, but on the basis this appears a first grant, so is actually getting a FAC. .22lr and .223 sound sensible and reasonable! adamskiseal
Thanks for the info, i don't really want to get anything beyond my means, if the occasion arises to cull some deer (and i hope it does) i will most probably apply for a gun on that basis, where about's do i put i would like to have the gun's moderated? and how do i go about wording it? sorry if i sound a bit stupid i would just like to get it right, Adam
The Essex Hunter
I have to agree it is a strange world…My first FAC application was for a .243 with deer and foxes on it, 15 months later and on a variation for a .22lr my licence was opened up… I did a lot of research including talking to the firearms department, gun shops and local shooters then proceeded the way which best suited myself because I believe in only buying once….never say never TEH

Then '.223 with moderator', foxes. Then the ammo, '.22RF, expanding, buy 1000, hold 1400' and similar for the .223 (or whatever you choose). The referees each fill in a couple of questions on the form you send in to the police (and sign the back of a photo each), and they each fill in a separate form which they send in. You give them a stamped addressed envelope and the forms they fill in and leave them to it, as you are not supposed to see what they write (i.e so they can safely say that you are a dangerous psychopath without you finding out). adamskiseal
would it be best to get a sgc holder to sign my form and photo's or would a friend be suffice? regards adam
bedwards1966
Try to go with a certificate holder if they fulfill the requirements. The police have already looked into them and should be happier with them.
