lewis2012
Hi all I currently have a .17HMR and have only had it for around 4months and fired around 600 rounds through it but the local permission has a few problems with charlie and now lambing season is due to start I'm going to apply for a variation to humanly dispatch charlie. I don't feel the HMR is a big enough round for the job although capable! Also Bridgend Constabulary will not ticket the HMR for fox. The land has been cleared. Also have a good friend offer to mentor me! The force did say if farmer signs, land cleared and got a mentor shouldn't be a problem. My mate has got most calibres up to a 308 but sold his 223 sometime ago for a 22-250. So either looking to apply for a 223 or a 22-250 just for Vermin + Fox shooting. I don't know if I'd have more difficulty in getting a ticket for a 22-250 as apposed to a 223? As my mentor currently has a 22-250. Also I will not be reloading myself so what type of price difference in the 2 different rounds to factory feed? I knw its around £16 for 20 rounds for the 223. Thanks all Lewis

kent
the 22-250 is no more dangerous than a .223 but the cops don't always see it that way, they both fire the same bullet and both go a long way if you have no backstop. No practical gain for 99 out of 100 fox and vermin shooters going 22-250 and it will be harder to moderate and burn the barrel quicker. No real difference in quality factory ammo costs. That said if he is a good mate and they will both shoot the same ammo perhaps arrangements can be made?
bi9johnny
Got both and
Frenchieboy
You could ask 10 22-250 shooters and 10 .223 shooters which was best and I suspect that you would get10 answers saying the 22-250 was best and another 10 saying that the .223 was best! Personally I do not think that there is much to choose between the two for foxing but if it were me I would go for the .223 if bought as a pre-owned gun as there is less chance of the barrel being burned if it has been used with "hot" home loads. It really is down to personal choice as far as i am concerned. Just my personal thoughts and I will admit that I am surposed to be picking up a .223 on Sunday so maybe I am a little biased! eccles
As Pete say's in his reply bang on. Shot plenty with a 222 then went to a 223 only because it was easier to get hold of ammo. I think the 223 is a brilliant round for fox, not had 1 fox get up after its been hit with it. I would not go up to 22.250 IMO no need for it. Some will say 243 etc but if a fox is hit with a 223 its dead only difference with bigger calibers it makes more mess of it. If i ever get a new rifle for fox it will be another 223. :good:
Essex Keeper
I've gone with the .223 which I believe suits my needs
bullet boy
My preference is .22-250. Would i change it for a .223 the answer is no because im very happy with my .22-250. Both .223 and .22-250 are excellent Fox calibres. ATB in whatever you choose.
