at the end of the day its good practice! i always call in when im shooting! obviously its better to ring! iv never had police turn up yet!!

In what way is it better to ring the police every time we go shooting? I certainly wouldn't want to be constantly ringing the old bill if i've changed my mind on where i'm going to shoot.

I do a fair bit of shooting and the police haven't turned up to stop me, either!

and hence start putting in place more legislation against shooting, if you cant see that then you may be dimmer than already suggested by your post,

if they are called they will send out the police as they are duty bound to. just because you have phoned them doesn't mean a response unit will not be sent

Was in the house last night watching the TV when the wife came running down stairs shouting " there a man in the playing field with a gun". We live near a council playing field which backs onto farmland. About 2 acres, This area is well used by dog walkers and kids!! So went upstairs with the NV and watched this**** in prone less than 50ft from the centre of a road and on public property. Think I heard a couple of moderated shots, probably an air gun. He looked well prepared, bag, camo and no lamp(assuming NV) Watched him for a few minutes as he walked and dropped to prone a couple of times. He then disappeared behind the hedge line! Within a couple of mins of him did appearing, a couple with dogs walked into the area.

1. It's public property

2. He fired with 50ft of a well used public highway

3. Doubt he had permission for the farm land if he entered from park. There is an access gate to the field just beside it!

4. Putting public in danger

5.Why??

This really angered me! It's idiots like him who ruin our ( the shooting community) name! He had no regard for safety and is obviously very selfish! The wife called the police but they are still to show up 12hr later!!

If I see him again what should I do? Call the local bobby or have a word? I almost feel like I should call the police again to have his gun confiscated!

So it could have been a lad playing soldiers

Geordie

Depending what the guy was using it is an offence to use a firearm near a road. That's in response to a previous comment.

In particular, care should be taken when siting Guns near roads. Section 161 of the Highways Act 1980 (England & Wales) makes it an offence to discharge a firearm within 50 ft of the centre of a highway with vehicular rights without lawful authority or excuse, if as a result a user of the highway is injured, interrupted or endangered.

In my view if i go shooting in close proximity to houses and i have not shot the land before i contact the police to let them no I'm shooting.

That way if any concerned people of the public make a call the police can advise the person that everything is ok.

I think people are jumping down the op throat a bit to much.

I may have it wrong but this isn't a country field, its in a area with public houses. considering the op has never noticed it before, means its out the the ordinary. He lives there he should know.

If its not normal then i feel a call to the police not 999 would be required.

in Towns teens go out shooting without permission etc on industrial estates shooting out cars. It happens. Its not like being out in the sticks.

A previous comment said these phone calls go towards us shooters looking bad and affects or hobby, well If this person didn't have permission and he shot someone what would that make us shooters look like?????

You have to remember its in a housed area, the op lives there and shoots, so knows what is not normal. How can people who don't live their decide what is worth a phone call and what isn't without knowing what is normal.

If the person did have permission then as i have said a phone call to notify police would be worth while in this instance as it was near houses.

sorry if this offends anyone but that's my view
