Hamster
the service records can just be simply thrown away and yes i know a guy who uses his works vehicle very time he got a private job to do he remove the speedo cable as they dont have trackers If you throw the service records away then only a fool would part with money on a three year old car with none, and if you fake docs then they can be traced with a couple of calls. Clocking pooer's back in the 80's was a common enough occurrence, today it's much much rarer.

Fake service invoices the same. It can all look very convincing. True its not undetectable any more but people still buy cars from adverts in the paper, off ebay, and (even worse) cars with "for sale" notices in the window. You phone the number and the person brings the car round to your house. How dodgy is that? But as they say, there's one born every minute. From my rather limited experience, vehicles used as taxis and vans are among the worst. Edited February 3, 2013 by Vince Green

Hamster
really? ? its happened to me and 4 people that I know....would not say rare at all Nothing feels rare if it's happened to you but compared to the 80's when almost anyone could wind back mileages with a drill, it IS rare. I must have taken in or sold a few thousand cars over the years but honestly struggle to count beyond one hands fingers those that had been clocked. subsonicnat
They do , Do checks sometimes, My Wife had a call about 6 years back from DVLA, and asked her to verify the mileage: Yes all was correct, she never did high mileage simple, But it was a check all the same::
parapilot
It's easy to change mileage, most cars it takes me seconds. But most garages only change displayed mileage in the clocks. Mileage is in many other units also that can be discovered. With the a4s above and all other vag if its diesel EDC you can calculate ecu run time (with speed that's recorded) and get a real mileage +\-5000 miles. So there are ways for people to tell on some cars. Speak to a pro if your in doubt to tell you any signs to look for.
