Length of shot gun pattern

I manged to catch another guns pattern shooting at a pheasant and was surprised how long it was (a couple of feet at 25 yards).

Not sure how clear this will be but hope it is of some interest. When you see the pattern on a plate or a piece of paper you don't appreciate the length of the pattern

From memory the pattern can be as long as 6 feet, this will depend on the amount of choke in the barrel, more choke = longer string. Thats why is not that disadvantageous to use tighter chokes especially when you are experienced. Brownings top barrel choke in the B25 game gun is usually 3/4, the B25 is hardly a novices gun due to its cost.

LOL . Yes but then I am sure shot at some of his too ! The pegs were really close together on this drive. Full video being posted later

Do you know what cartridges he shoots?

A little while ago I cut open some Express Supreme Game 32gm-6s and found a complete mix of shot size inside. They measured between 2.4-2.8mm, so that's ALMOST a mix of 7s, 6s and 5s in the same size 'six' shot cartridge.

I've been wondering if this was done deliberately to give you a bigger window of lead because the smaller shot slows down more than the larger, stretching out the shot string. Therefore, if you give less than perfect lead the front of the shot string hits the bird. If you give more than perfect lead, the end of the shot sting hits it.

Either way, you bring more down (but maybe more are runners) and stick to that cartridge.

It seems unlikely they have loaded three sizes by mistake.

its because the shells have different specification shot. olympic or world cup style usually are very strict on the shotsize variation. whereas the budget ones tend to drift all over the place. its not intentional at all, but thats what finally ends up in a shell.
