Hi,

Used some Lyalvalve super game 1 shot weight 42gms at the weekend for roost shooting. Found them very good. every hit was a straight kill.

what are your thoughts on these cartridges? also does anybody know how much these cost a thousand?

Cheers

I've got a couple of boxes of those in #1 shot. I use those and hull 50gm BBs for foxes. I think they are very good.

I did however buy 250 of the supreme game #6 and thought they were very poor for the price. Considering they are supposed to be among the best.

I found that they ejected poorly, sometimes not at all in my o/u and all though I didn't pattern them I found they didn't come close to being as good as gamebore clear pigeon or hull special pigeon which are my faves.

I use the super duper Olympic ones when I am treating myself on the clays. They are the nuts and really do go an enormous distance. I use a mix of 7.5's (rabbits), 8's (outgoers) and 9's (easy incomers). They are a bit pricey, but hey people spend all sorts of money on chokes, glasses, gloves and other paraphernalia in the belief that it helps them. My folley is for these cartridges.

For idle clay breaking I use the "Sporter" cheapy cartridges which work very well.

For game - Eley 32g of No. 6 does the business.

Im pretty new to this as i have always used the cartridges my dad gave me to use but now im looking at different makes, sizes etc. what would this kind of cartridge be most used for?

Foxes, squirrel drey blasting, Geese where you can use lead and long range hares maybe. Those 42gm jobs are a bit heavy on the shoulder to be shooting many in a session and are well over the top for roost shooting. You would be better off going for a 30 or 32gm #6. That is ample for most uk rough/roost shooting and wont do your shoulder in. Cheaper also.

MUngler - you are spot on. The number of people I know who spend an arm and a leg on guns, chokes, accessories and then buy the shells that the club is selling - a bit daft. Get a brand that suits you and your gun and stick with them - price is secondary. Once tried some Baschieri and Pellagri - expensive, but lethal on very distant targets.

I use Express cartridges wherever possible and find them to be excellent. I use Pro Comp for clays and special pigeon for pigeon and game.

For wildfowling I use Hevi shot, although I am getting good results with Remington Nitro steel as well.

No.1s for roost shooting is a but of an overkill though, I would use 30g no.6.
