UGM there is a Cens guy just outside Dromore -- a friend of mine got his made up with him .

Thanks mate.

I will have a look, £90 seems great especially when you can upgrade later on. Though TBH I couldn't tell much difference listening to the sound clips on their website. But I would assume it will be a difficult thing to replicate using a microphone to record.

Try listening to it through headphones, I tried on the PC speakers and iPad and wasn't great, with the headphones on though you can tell the differences on each model.

The muting of gunfire was similar in all the ranges, so for protection you won't go wrong with any choice. The quality in sound when listening to conversation and ambiant sounds is what you pay your money for.

Does anyone know how these passive filters work? Do they only protect against loud sharp percussive noise (like with a firearm), or can they also work for general protection like power tools, or even a loud concert?

I'm curious to know the technical workings of these valves.

Just looks like a solid plastic block mate. Not really a valve.

It must be attenuating the sound somehow. Looking at the ACS sonic product, they do advertise it as a valve:

Different product though - I thought that the CENS might work similarly as the plastic inserts in the photos of their website appear to have a hole in them:

My guess is they are activated by a pressure wave or attenuate the sound due to the size and shape of this 'valve' between the outside world and your ear. I have mailed CENS - it will be interesting to hear what they say. If it were just a solid block, you would not be able to hear speech as they claim.

They work on a valve system as do all sonic valves.

They shut off when the sound reaches a certain level, sound is just pressure waves picked up on the ear drum and turned into sound by our bodies. The same sound pressure wave works agains a diaphragm in the valve shutting when the pressure is enough to force it closed.

You can blow through them gently but any harder and the valve shuts blocking them off.

Figgy

Ok, so if you use them WITH some standard over the ear protection, presumably the CENS will not activate at all.

I got this info from them, but not really much in the way of answer to my specific questions :)

I wonder how these frequencies relate to a gunshot. My over-the-ear protection (Peltor Optime III) attenuates by 35dB.

I got my CENS passives today. They are quite comfortable - though i'm still sceptical they will fully protect me. If I wiggle my ears they seem to loosen a bit. Besides shooting - i'm wondering what the best way to test the efficacy is. I did find that using the little tube of lubricant (which to me just feels/looks like lip balm) helps with the seal quite a bit - also helps get them in and out comfortably.

I was going to use them along side my over-hear protection (belt and braces) - so at worst, they are a fashion accessory :)

Excellent thread. I too use the old sonic II plugs and find after a few hours they dont feel comfortable. Esp if you take them out whilst you are having a break then put them back in. After reading this thread I think i`ll be going for a set of the CENS ones now. Just need to check where a local place is near me.

I wore my Cens for four hours on Saturday. All sounds were slightly muffled although I could hold a conversation in the hide without problem. I only let off a few shots (atmospheric pressure apparently) and the gun shot was a quiet pfft!

Most importantly they were extremely comfortable. If it wasn't for grbeduff looking like he was lip synching I wouldn't know I was wearing them. :good:

I also took a phone call whilst wearing them and they were fine.
