30-6
How many people on here consider it necesarry to wear hearing protection when firing a moderated .17 hmr ? Is there any info about the decibel reading of said gun being fired and being heard by the shooter ? I appreciate that each scenario is different, open field or next to a wood for example would produce different levels of noise, so just a generalisation. al4x
I don't but then I don't with my .243 either,
mick miller
As above. The ringing in my ears is testament to that. If you opt for ear protection it's possibly best to spend the wonga and go for the Cens electronic ones. I've just never had that much spare cash rattling around so my moulded plugs (worn clay shooting) are solid jobs
al4x
I always use them with a shotgun or in moderated rifle but with a mod on really it never seems that loud
CZ550Kevlar
If I'm shooting out into an open field then no hearing protection, if I'm shooting along a woods I wear them as the sound bounces back when along the tree line even with a mod. sepulchre
I don't wear ear protection for my .17HMR moderated and .243 moderated I do wear ear plugs when shooting shotguns but that's only because Ii don't want my hearing to get any worse as it is already shot - 70% loss in left and 30% loss in my right ear. My resulting hearing loss was a combination of 7 years in a 130db foundry and umpteen thousand rounds of ammo in 9mm, .40 S&W, .357MAG and .44MAG mostly without ear defenders except for the .357 & .44 In short it was my own fault - And I was stupid not to think my hearing would be affected - aged 27 doc recommended I should wear hearing aids and now aged 44 I'm still thinking about that If any new comer to shooting reads this, please, oh please wear good quality ear plugs or ear defenders, its worth every penny / time / inconvenience / missing the opportunity of a shot or feeling a bit daft / once you've shot your ears (excuse the pun) there's no repairing them. Thunderbird
The odd shot in the open then no, but zeroing or taking a few then yes. I often use the same Bisley foam ones I use for shotgun rough shooting and it's a breeze. I value my hearing too much to risk it.
