Mr pigeon
Hi people. I'm looking to get my first rifle and am after one which I can use for fox, rabbit pigeons etc. Budget is about £800 not sure if this is enough but if it is I will need a scope ( suggestions welcome) and a moderator, ( suggestions welcome). The £800 is just for the rifle. Foxing will be at night mostly. Please let me know your suggestions. Thanks and cheers.

TIGHTCHOKE
You wish to shoot PIGEONS and FOX with the SAME RIFLE?
Mr pigeon
Well that's what I'm asking really. It will be my first rifle so will be limited to certain ones. A 243 is out of the question. So ok a fox rifle and pigeon rifle then? Which would be best do you think?
TIGHTCHOKE
I think you'd be better off using a shotgun for the pigeon!
colin lad
where are you and what will your feo allow for fox? in Beds they wont allow anything smaller than .22 centerfire which is too much for pigeon if you intend to eat them also you wont want to be firing a fox capable rifle up into tree tops, you could get a 2nd hand .22lr for bunnies for £250 and i picked up my .222 for fox for £300 so both for £550 that leaves you £250 for a good 2nd hand springer air rifle thats the way i would go but thats just me colin
Mr pigeon
I would only be rifling ground pigeons for the decoy situation, flapper whirlybird etc. Mainly foxes on our shoot. I will check with my officer and see, was just really after ideas and costs.

So ok a fox rifle and pigeon rifle then? Which would be best do you think?Any CF too much for pigeon unless its pure destruction, plucked they are quite a small bird even .22 LR with subs is a lot of gun. if its just to kill then I suppose you could use anything as long as the shot was safe .50 BMG perhaps?. I suggest a hornet in .22 flavour as the best fox and rabbit gun, it will also kill pigeon just don't expect to put them on the table or shoot them out of trees etc

Martin g
If your decoying pigeons fella, then I would stick to shotgun, so then you won't have to wait for them to land. Rifle wise I can't comment, I've only just applied for my FAC for mr fox in 223 flavour and on same budget as you but for complete set up, rifle, scope, and mod.
