Late start on peas and cheeky roost shoot

The day started with a phone call from my old man at 10. It went something along the lines of, get up you lazy ***, there's loads on the peas! I had stayed up late watching a film!

Got to the farm and dad said they have been hitting it along the hedge about half way down, but they are going in the trees first. He wouldn't be shooting as it was to cold! The wind was coming from behind so I found a nice bush covered with ivy to act as a wind break.

Got the decoys out and hide up, but the gun was still in the slip while I was fafing around with the hide. And one came around for a look. Great I thought! Loads of pigeons were floating around but would not commit to the decoys. Then it dawned on me. I have this year invested in 12 flok she'll decoys. When I got them I thought they were a bit light in colour but give them a go. To put it straight, they are ****! To light! This was proved when I bought them in and replaced them with my old plastic shells.

The change was instant. I was getting flocks dive bombing the pattern 1's, 2's 5's 30's. this happened for around 30 mins before it went to the odd 1 or 2 every 10 mins or so.

I managed 36 on the peas, with my first ever treble on pigeons and 3 pigeon with 2 shots! Both flukey shots. The second being more so!

The farmer then came onto the field to roll it, stoping as he went past to say the other field of peas would be in tomorrow. Good news!

Packed up and decided to have a go in the only wood we have. I normally shoot this wood every weekend from 1st February, but for different reasons I have not been near it this year. Got up there around 6ish, leaving my phone at home in the rush to get out the house, I had no watch for the time, only the clock house bells telling me what time it was.

When I got up there around 20 got out the trees. It is not a big bit of wood so 20 is a few for that bit of the farm. Got into my favourite spot and was banging away almost constantly untill 7.30. Managed 15 up there. The crops were stuffed with rape and clover.

All shot today with express steel, 32g 5's. I bought a slab just to try them out and I have been very impressed with them. The range and hitting power has been just as good as lead. So 51 for the day, not to shabby as April is normally a terrible months for us. So it's a good start!

Cheers, pete

You could say that. It was nice not having to lump it around tho. It's the old battery of my car. It's a lot of work but cheaper than buying 2 motorbike batteries. It lasts all day running 2 magnets off it but like I say, a right back breaker when you can't drive to the hide!
