Martin&Oakley
Ok, so i'm going out permission hunting this Sunday for the first time. I have read all the helpful hints/tips/advice and i've had a good look on google maps for possible farms to descend on. issues i have: 1. no decoy kit if someone says yes and have a pop now. i will be taking my gun and possibly some camo clothing in the boot. oh and ammo. 2. car, do i take my seat leon or the mother in laws freelander? what would make the better first impression? 3. I'm a weekend shooter, so should i cap myslef at a certain amount of permissions/acreage? im not assuming i will get anything. cheers. Ralphster
Cant comment on the above but found out a few hurdles today. Been out today, first problem is some farms have massive gates blocking any way in, so had to drive by. Other farms had long drives then massive gates. The other problem was no farmer was around at the time I visited. Others was lucky and pulled in as farner was in yard. Met some farmers and despite my apprehension they were very nice but either had someone or family shot for them, I thanked them for there time and asked if i could leave a card in case one of his farming friends needed anyone. Ran out of time and learnt abit for next time. I also have kept a log of farms visited/response etc. Hope you find this useful
Martin&Oakley
how long did you go out for and how many farms did you manage to get round? I was going to mark maps, but i think i will just keep a log. also are sundays a bad time to hassle farmers?
TIGHTCHOKE
Good luck with your permission hunting. 1. take everything you might need in the boot but don't expect to be shooting on your first day of asking. The farmer may well wish to check your references first. 2. Take the vehicle you'll normally be using. 3. Get one first and then see how much time it takes you shoot it. That will allow you to see if you can cover more ground. Good luck T.C.
Ralphster
I did an hour, an got round a few lanes full of farms near me. I got farm names from Yell.com search farms then your nearest villages etc. This show the farms on a map also the name, so on one farm I knew it was Mr so and so which I hoped was a nice touch. Yell doesnt show all farms tho, worth while for some info. Not sure when is a good or bad time really, guess friday 6pm aint the best but maybe it is. Going out again at the weekend, shall share notes so to speak. Good Luck

Martin&Oakley
Any last tips/advice on gaining permission tomo? Plan is to head out about 8ish and do an hour or so recce around the area then go knocking about 930. Would 930 be to early for a farmer? sitsinhedges
A lot of small farms struggle to afford all the machinery to grow their crops. Consequently they have contractors who pay them an acre rate to farm the land for them. If you can find out who these contractors are in your area they can be a goldmine for permissions because they have to have literally thousands of acres of land to pay for the huge investment in machinery they have. -Mongrel-
9.30 am you'll probably find them already out and about. Just read all the tips about being polite, smart, conversational etc. If it was me, I'd decline to shoot until permissions were in place in writing. That said, take some permission slips, copies of SGC and insurance, you never know! Expect to get knocked back, it happens pretty much every time. Just be polite, and leave your number in case circumstances change.
Martin&Oakley
Downloaded the BASC permits and pasted my mug onto it. Is mole skins, check shirt and wellies OTT? Im packing everything, just incase!
FalconFN
Good luck, you'll get many knock-backs as they will probably already have someone shooting the land, but keep going. I've never asked on a Sunday but I can't imagine that'll make much difference to most farmers. I think you are doing everything right but if you happen to see a field of rape or fresh drilling being hit by pigeons, or even a field with lots of rabbits, then certainly find the farmer and point it out and suggest that you could help them with the problem. Good luck, hope all goes well.
FalconFN
Oh, and wearing the 'country uniform' will only work if that is how you normally dress, brand new slacks and clean wellies may make you look like a creepy farmer wannaby.
