njc110381
I hate to say this but I'm getting a bit miffed with home loading at the moment and want a large rimfire for long range bunnies. I never rated the HMR so am thinking WMR? What are they like to shoot? Performance on close foxes? Trajectory etc? I'm already having second thoughts on my custom .17H. It feels lovely with the titanium mod and shoots perfectly, but I'm not set on it like I thought I would be. I really thought I'd love it but I don't, and I don't know why? When things don't appeal I sell them! I want another 6.5x55 too!
kyska
I like mine, (mine) they are far more accurate than some people say, I shoot far tighter groups with the wmr than the hmr, but that could be for many reasons. Shame you're too far away, you'd be welcome to come and slap a few down range at mine.
wymberley
Like any rimfire you just have to find the ammo that suits the particular rifle. It is a bit 'loopy', so for bunnies you may want to go for something c30gns but as ever, the over-riding factor is grouping consistency. For fox, there's no contest. There was, until Federal downgraded their 50gn offering velocity, but if you can get the RWS to shoot to an acceptable level out to 120 yards, this IS the fox round. njc110381
I want to have a complete reshuffle of my guns. The 7-08 is a lovely gun with next to no rounds through it but I want another 6.5. Funny how that's the first stalking calibre I had and after loads of others I wish I'd kept it! The .22 semi is fun, but that fun has worn thin... again! Then there's the .17 which is again fantastic but I'm not set on it. I don't know what I'm playing at with my rifles. Even the very best guns I have I get bored of? And I've never had a WMR.
wymberley
Swap you a decent 22 Hornet for a 17 Hornet even if it is a cheap old CZ!
njc110381
It owes me a bit much to do a straight swap. Can you PM me some pictures?
wymberley
There are two pictures of the HW 66 Jagd Match on the Weihrauch website. Mine is as per the bottom one but with the single trigger as shown in the upper. The barrel is 18" and threaded with a bipod swivel stud in place on the woodwork. Mine is stamped as having been sourced via the official UK importer. To be fair, I was half joking. Do you really want a 22Hornet? You sold it once, bought it back and, yep, OK it needed a new barrel but you went for the 17 rather than the 22. A good alternative is to have the 22WMR and a 222 - then stepping up to whatever stalking calibre you want and which I know nowt about. Having said that; when in doubt do nowt - wait and see how the WSM takes your fancy. I have to say that before this conversation started, as the Ruger #1 is absolute mustard for the fox, I toyed with the idea of trading in/selling the Weihrauch and getting a WSM for long range bunny. I'm still of two minds, so at the moment doing nowt is rather appealing I have to say.
njc110381
I don't really. I fancy a WMR and already have my .223 for longer stuff. The Hornet and .223 are similar and overlap a bit much. I'm not keen on selling the .223 and keeping the .17 as I like the extra authority on foxes and the ability to take munties if I see them at the beginning of an evening. Underdog
Well I am a big fan of wmr. A friend shot one for years and he did many many fantastic shots with it, running rabbits and many many fox's. He would shoot in excess of 150yds on rabbits and although used many types of ammo his favourite was the RWS and CCI 30grn loading. U. Frenchieboy
I will throw my pennies worth in here if I may. I used to own a .22WMR which was conditioned for fox. I used 50g ammunition in it which was fine for fox out to about 125 yards and would group very accurately, but it got a bit too loopy for my liking at ranges beyond 125 yards with 50g ammunition - However it still no doubt had enough "punch" to knock foxes down cleanly out to maybe 150 yards or more but I never tried it on a fox out beyond 125(ish) yards so I can't say for sure. If you really are wanting something for longer range rabbits and foxes than about 125 yards then you should (In my opinion) be thinking more about either a .22 Hornet or a .222! Some may disagree with me, if they do then so be it, we all have different opinions on different calibres!
Bewsher500
I have a WMR and it was my close range fox gun for a long time. anything inside 125-150yds is point and shoot. I never tried 50gr but the 30gr (or were they 33gr?) Gamepoint were great and now they do a Vmax as well it hits so much harder than an HMR (which I also have), the ammo is much cheaper, way cheaper than reloading a hornet could be done I have a .222 now for foxes as all the ones stupid enough to stay within 100 or so yards are now dead!
