MC
I would recomend a 12bore and use 24g cartridges. Also it would depend how your wife is built. If she is petite you may be better off with a 20b and use 18 - 20g cartridges Don't dismiss a 28bore, they are really sweet to shoot, and if she doesn't like it then you can have some fun with it. hope this helps. the last engineer
12 or 20 will do, i personaly start newcomers on an auto, its lighter less reciol and easier for a female or junior to hold, upperbody strength can be an issue, dont get ther shooting off 50 rnds off the bat, a couple here a couple there, rest in between, lighter loads like a 1oz target at say 1100 fps should do, glasses and ear plugs a must think safe all the time and good luck to you, make sure she has fun, that way your toy stock will go up like mine Martin

Poacher
Definately a 20b, my sister shoots and when she first started i thought she'd easily cope with a 12 but it turned out to be a disaster , she got bruising and really didn't enjoy it, 20 20 20 all the way....I'd recommend a 20bore silli pidg...... kiwi
if it fits , get her a 26inch 20g gas franchi raptor, love that gun, its a straight shooter that dont kick with 28gram 1oz loads
Bradders
My daughter who is 5'3" (age 16) shoots with a 12g Benelli Beccaccia (Woodcock) semi with 24gm loads, there is no noticable recoil with these shells, the gun only weighs 6 1/4 pounds. The barrel is 24" which seems short but the magazine is only 2 shells long so it does not look everly long under the barrel. Once the gun is in your hands it feel and shoot fine. Only problem for a leftie would be the shells being ejected across the face unless you can get a left handed self loader which may be tricky unless you but new. Good luck..... darebear
ok..... i'm giving you the opinion of a female, who had her first go at clays last weekend. a month or so ago i decided i wanted to try having a go with a shotgun. so unbeknown to me, scaffy and hawkeye had loaded scaffy's browning fusion semi-auto with 36g cartridges. ha! the ****. thank god no one had a camera to hand to catch me landing on my bloody ****. it nearly put me off for life. but then scaffy, hawkeye and lord geordie met up on sunday at a local clay club and i decided i wanted to have another go. scaffy had brought along 24g cartridges for me and i had a go with his gun and lord geordies (lanber 12 bore sporter). i had expected scaffy's browning to be the most comfortable and easiest for me to use being a semi-auto. however, it's recoil had more of a kick. apparently this is probably because it's a lighter gun. lord geordie's lanber is heavier and i reckon absorbs more of the recoil. and i preferred having a go with that. i was utter pants at hitting anything though. i reckon i was being a typical woman and more bloody concerned about how daft i looked

webber
In recent years Ive tought several ladies to shoot. Without exception they all settled on the Beretta semi auto. I always start with 28gm cartridges, but 24gms available if the gun kicks a bit too much. With regard to percieved recoil, I doubt that 20 bore has any advantage, and may even be a disadvantage as the gun would generally weigh less and therefore not be capable of absorbing as much of thee recoil energy. webber
