P03
Most of you will have noticed that recently there have been some decidedly dodgy first time posters on the Forum. There was one this AM (removed pretty damn tout suite...Ta Mods) that had a few links to alleged porn sites....this got me thinking.......if I was an anti how could I cause shooters to lose their sport?? I'd put some links to paedophile sites on their forum and label them provacatively. Guess what happens to your FAC/SGC if you get caught with that sort of stuff on your PC?? Take Care!! Don't open links from dodgy posts/unknown posters.
the ferreter
those are automated posters not real folk
Cranfield
Actually some are automated and some are not. Changes have been made that should prevent the automated ones getting through, but individuals registering and posting Spam is a different matter. There are a number of very secure options Admin have , but they could cause inconveniences to members, especially new ones. The whole issue is under review. simon.w
I am an admin on a motorcycle forum and we get quite a few of these as well. The ones where people join, post their rubbish and disappear are difficult to stop unless you make new members wait for a day or two until they can be checked out or have their new posts go into a moderating queue. The downside of doing this is that it might put off new members who I reckon are the lifeblood of any forum.
pin
Decent "captcha" sign-up technology will stop most scripted sign-ups. It stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha Most of you have probably seen it, its where you are asked to type in the numbers/letters in an obscure picture, the idea being that so obscured, a computer can't "read" these and therefore a human has to be involved to do it. Other than that I think members wanting to sign up manually and then spam, well, that's what we have mods for, isn't it.
Teal
We have a randomly generated number script on the registration page, but it appears there are now spam sweatshops in the far east- where people are paid literally to sign up to message boards and post spam. pin
Sounded a lot harsher than intended, no offence to you Cranners, or indeed the other mods, was intended. I have moderated a bunch of forums in the past, thankless job for the most part and I am sure there isn't a member here who doesn't appreciate the job you guys do. My post was intended to say, in summary "you can stop some of it, the more deliberate and persistent would probably have to be moderated" I'll get back in my box now
