Manchester hunt "sabs"

There are various saboteur groups around the country. They basically go onto shoots to disrupt shooting and shoot management. They sometimes stand in front of the guns to stop shooting, sometimes they act like beaters but to scare birds away from the guns, sometimes they interfere with traps and the like, any part of the shoot could be a target, they'll do almost anything if it interferes with shooting. Some of their activities are illegal.

They've been around for years, some groups for decades.

Sabs disrupting beagling several times last season. Pretty unpleasant tactics - abusing elderly followers & filming despite children being present. Clearly a lot of them were itching to have a ruck.

Police have been very sympathetic and helpful to hunt staff but can do little on public access land.

If we had sabs on the shoot it would be guns put away and call to police - better chance of getting them ejected from private land I suppose.

Suggest we limit discussion to sensible lawful ideas to limit difficulties rather than invite unwanted attention or disclose tactics on a public forum

BASC has a page on their website about it.

One tactic is not to put pegs out until the day of the shoot, and put decoy pegs where shooting will not take place. Doesn't matter if an anti is reading this post, this tactic will still throw them off - they won't be able to tell if something is a trick or not.

I would advise making close aquaintance with your wildlife crime officer he has a good knowledge of who might be active in your area and the tactics they use. He is also there to look after you and can be called quite quickly. Mine's a helpful guy who is a countryman and shoots - he's good company and has been nothing but helpful. Made me think rather differently about the police.
