browning A5

I had a go with a new A5 last week. A wooden stocked, 3" chambered version.

Being based on the Benelli Inertia action it is very light. If you like a light, fast handling gun, then it`s great. I already shoot a Benelli so I`m aware that felt recoil might be an issue for some, although it is`nt an issue for me.

I especially liked the speed load facility.

The general build quality of the gun was o.k. It is`nt in the same league as the original A5 and, in my opinion,it is`nt as good as a Benelli or a Beretta, but then you are`nt paying those sort of prices. Being inertia operated, the internal springs are different and the action did not have the tinny, scratchy sound made by the likes of the Maxus.

If I was in the market for a new auto, I`d give the new A5 a long, hard look. I quite liked it.

Neil.....I bought an A5 about a couple of months back. I was a little sceptical as it was Inertia and a different kettle of fish to my normal gas semi`s that I`ve been using. Anyway, I took the plunge and went for it.

Despite what others might say Inertia Semi`s DO kick a little harder than gas operated guns...FACT.

So take this into consideration especially if you`re not keen on recoil.

Initially, I loved the Browning, it handled great and the extra recoil didn`t bother me.

I liked the weight of the gun and it swung lovely.

However.....after a couple of days I started having major problems with the gun not cycling my shot cartridges. Most Inertia driven shotguns need a "Breaking in" period so I took this into consideration. When using the Browning I read the first couple of boxes of cartridges need to be on the heavy side to help this "Breaking in" period. Again, I took the advice and used 36gr,40gr and 42gr.

There was obviously a major problem as it wasn`t ejecting ANY cartridge I put through it. So I took it back to the shop and to cut a long storey Browning replaced it with another NEW gun.......................To my dismay.............it happened AGAIN with the other NEW gun!!!!!!!!!!. Again, I took it back to the shop...It was sent to Browning who sent the gun back saying they`d sorted the problem.

Went pigeon shooting 2 days later............and you`ve guessed it......same problem. By this time I was pulling my hair our....[what I have left!!]. So thats TWO different NEW A5`s with the same problem. So in the end I asked for my money back and bought what I was going to buy originally a GAS gun!!!.....and stuck to a make I`ve been shooting with for years without any cycling issues. I ended up with a Remington Versa Max...............I couldn`t be happier.

Since I bought my A5 I`ve read reviews on the A5 with other shooters from across the pond with exactly the same problem.

So take this into account when making your decision. You may buy one and find its great with no issues.

Sometimes gun purchasing is the luck of the draw........unfortunately I was handed 2 lemons.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Further to the above. The bloke who owned the A5 that I looked at took it clay shooting over the weekend and had three ejection failures out of fifty shots fired using cartridges appropriate for running in a new semi auto.

Maybe the A5 is`nt such a good idea after all.
