snipers eye
hi all,i have a cz 22lr with sak mod,but using Eley subs i still hear a fair bit of a crack from it,anyone with the same experience?,the crack is louder than the thwack when it hits home,(rabbits),its a new sak, replaceing the old one,but both sound the same,so im thinking if a sak cant do a great job on a 22 with subs,it cant be that good on a.17hmr that ill be getting soon, any thoughts?thanks

fieldwanderer
Sak's only really a cheap mod but you'll not get much quieter really - I think people expect a bit too much from moderators; I've gone through about 10 in a quest to go quieter but I've come to the conclusion that there's very little difference even with the expensive mod's. For what it's worth, I firmly believe the ASE utra I have is the quietest I've used but the difference between that and any other mod is so slight you'd barely be able to tell. I think, in the real world, you're looking for a sort of dull noise rather than silence; a noise more likely to be mistaken for a falling pinecone or whatever than a bang like a kid's cap gun if that makes sense. To regain your confidence in your sak, have a friend fire a shot with it with you 30yds away - in front but far enough to either side of the bullet's path to be safe, you'll be surprised how quiet it is from the rabbit's point of view. With the HMR, I'm starting to wonder if I need a mod to be honest - with the mod you don't get the initial boom but it's not really that much quieter really with the sonic crack. snipers eye
thanks all for replies,a mate let me try a mod he bought for £20 this mourning, its called a Parker hale clone/still,way quieter than sak.just hear the pin crush the case, and thwack on target, gonna get one of these, looks like the PH,but baffles are aluminium, surprised how quite it was,sak not going back on,will try it on the hummer when i get it
jay222
I've got a Sak on my hmr and a ph on my cz .22 no complaints about either really. The first few baffles on the Sak are showing signs of blast damage but it's had a few thousand rounds through it so still had my money's worth out of it. I need a mod for my 10/22 but I'm unsure what I will get don't think there's much difference performance wise just want something to match the rifles looks

Beardo
at the end of the day, you'll never really get rid of the crack of a .17hmr, but with good ammo (this makes a huge difference with .22lr) you can make a very quiet .22 some .22lr ammo is very poor and it can often go supersonic (even though it's supposed to be a sub)
alendil
using anshutz .22 LR with winchester subs HP bigest problem is sound when bullet hiting bunny.
Dekers
These sort of threads simpy go to show peoples preferences, biases and the odd issue. I have a SAK on both my .22lr and on my WMR, they perform brilliantly, when my second Sirocco dies on my HMR that will get a SAK as well. They are excellent VFM and performance. The Parker Hale is also a cracking piece of kit for the money, but I gave up on them years ago as it doesn't work for me like the SAK. I do like my Sako (Yes, Sako, not SAK) mod though, just a bit long!
Cannon
I use a SAK as I found it to be quieter than the PH on my .22. Try Winchester subsonics to see what they're like. I switched from eley because the Winchester were quieter.
