shootinfishin
as much as i dont like people using unsuitable shells, this statement is true. Doesn't make it right The cartridges are there and available so I can't think of any good reason to hit a fox with 7s
Guest cookoff013
it doesnt make it right, you are right. however i`m betting that most shotgun owners have never pattern tested shells, patterned chokes, patterned shotsizes, and loads. so does that make those who buy and use the almost right shells bad because they havent evaluated them?. most of us have faith, we bung the shells in and hope for a bang. shootinfishin
No not at all, I prefer 3-4 for geese but you can get away with 5 but I wouldn't use 7 let alone on a fox lol
robbiep
At close enough range, virtually anything from a shotgun will drop a fox. The proof : I was out rabbiting the other week with a single barrel 410, using Eley 2.5" shells with 12.5g of No. 6 shot. Shot a vixen at about 12 yards, was dead on the spot. shootinfishin
Most shooters won't be that close. Is it worth risking cruelty/wounding/damage to the sport and ammo for the anti brigade to prove a point? If your going to kill you should always use appropriate ammo to ensure a quick humane end. God knows our sport needs no more negative publicity. A vixen ending up at the pdsa with an **** full of pigeon shot doesn't help

If your going to kill you should always use appropriate ammo to ensure a quick humane end. Oh, when I first saw that fox, it was probably 50 yards away. I was never going to shoot at that range, and I wouldn't even consider it with a 12 bore and 50g of No. 2 at that sort of distance. However, the appropriate ammo/cartridge is just as important as the appropriate range. Where an Alphamax BB will drop a cartridge at 30 yards (so it's the appropriate ammo), it's not appropriate at say 70 yards. To describe a cartridge as appropriate or not is wrong. It's the combination of cartridge and range that makes it appropriate or not.
