A neighbour came round the other week with his SMK B4 Air rifle.

He said he has been shooting pigeons at his works warehouse.

And the pellets are just bouncing off the pigeons and they fly off.

I just put it over my chrono and it was doing 6.4 ftlb.

They would unless its a headshot, chest and wings are like armour plate especially with a full crop.

which is why your asking on a forum

as fenboy has pointed out, unless you can PROVE every non lethal method to remove them has failed, then you could still be fined/taken to court etc, just because it's on the pest list, does to make it legal, but then you know that already

Dude, read the question !! I was asking whether it was considered the done thing among our little shooting community.

I am well aware of the legal side of things. But thanks for your comments.............good day to you sir !! B)

I am well aware of that I have been doing vermin control for over forty years.

The point of my post was a rifle doing 6.4 ftlb wasn`t up to the job.

Thats why i told him to put his SMK **** in the bin and get a 12 ftlb Rifle.

He called again a few days later to show me a HW 77 he had got for £150.

I put it over my chrono it`s doing 11.8 ftlb. And It came with a 3x9x50 scope. Jammy ****.

Wow !! This little subject has stirred up some venom !!

Many people have said that the pistol won't have the power to kill cleanly...................you are all wrong !! I have dropped pigeons with it on a number of occasions .

To be quite honest, my neighbour wants me to "Whack" these cereal killers because they are a nuisance, damaging their crops ( yes they are farming ) these 2 particular beasts are landing on the washing line and crapping all over the clean clothes.

This PigeonWatch site is full of people who seem to have nothing better to do than reply to topics in a sarky, twatish manner !!

Can someone find me the bit of legislation that says that I can't shoot a pigeon with a pistol ?

And all the comments regarding humane killing.........I'm with you on the subject, I don't ever wish to cause unnecessary suffering. But lets be mature, factual and honest about this shall we? I have shot pigeons with an air-rifle ( it aint always pretty ) I have shot pigeons with a shotgun ( it aint always pretty ) even the greatest shots like Mr Digweed will have to wring the odd neck to dispatch the flapping pigeon !!!

So if I shoot a pigeon from 10m with my pistol...........it comes down, but is still flapping a bit..............then I run over and wring it's neck ( Pronto ) is that any worse than using a shotgun? or a rifle ? no method is 100% clean.

Killing is what it is !!! Cant wait to read more unhelpful comments

ps. Thanks to everyone who took the time to give a sensible, mature and well thought out response to this topic !!!!!!!!!!

I would imagine the "sarky" comments is referring to me

but Im just pointing out the law as it stands in the uk today

and crapping on a washing line is not in the regulations of a bona fide reason to cull any bird

but as pointed out by yourself and others who know the law, yet continue to put up posts that ask /advertise that the rules are being bent

how would it look if everyone replied to these type of posts saying yes,go for it, s od the law, blast their heads off, beat them with a stick, throw stones at them, do whatever you feel best

it would not only give newbies the wrong illegal information, that would save them reading the actual do's and don'ts and not stand up in a court of law (because they read it on a forum)

but also make the pigeon watch forum look like a forum full of gun tooting rednecks, rather than a very good site to get correct information from, I know what I'd rather it be,

at the end of the day, we all live in the real world, we all know that rules are broken sometimes, but the normal thing to do in those circumstances is to keep one's trap shut well and truly tight, and not post it on an OPEN FORUM

the sarky y g it is done

The truth Stubby Sir is already out there, youtube for one. Being economical with the truth is playing into the anti's hands, it is a type of shame to try hide the common situation of a less than ideal dispatch of a critter. I extol the fact all efforts to end a bad situation are made asap. That is the real truth and trying to fool the anti is a ticking time bomb in my humble opinion.

The case around my home, a small village the wood pigeon numbers are as great as any colony of ferals living under a road bridge and again to assume a single dropping from the woodpigeon around here is causing panic is folly, their poop is splattered everywhere! And it is totally out of proportion to other birds poop. The locals seem to prefere discreet measures to control the localised problem.

I don't recomend the airpistol approach but that is purely based on my own pistol shooting and I refuse to assume on the op's performance with his pistol!

Mate you asked if we considered it the done thing. It would have been pretty unhelpful if we'd al just put yes or no. People have tried to explain why they think that, which includes concerns over the power, the kind of example it sets and whether this situation is stretching the laws of the GL, just to get a bit of shooting in.

The overwhelming opinion here is that no, it's not the done thing. Whether you listen to a lot of very experienced and knowledgeable people is up to you...

Fair comment sir ! I did ask for everyone's opinion on the matter, and most have been quite helpful !!! I have taken on board the fact that most people do not share my enthusiasm for a 10m Pistol head shot, in my garden.

So I wont be doing it with the pistol, ok ?

So thanks a bunch to everyone that has contributed to this little topic. Just a shame that some of can't reply in a more friendly manner, and seem quite happy to be extremely patronising and snippy. ( you probably know who you are )

I never ceases to amaze me how different someone's response will be in a Face to Face situation, compared to a " tucked up all nice and safe behind a keyboard" type scenario !!!!!

I do like reading stuff on PigeonWatch.............but the site is fast becoming full off self -serving, trumpet blowing, sarky comment leaving burks !!!

Enough said on the matter now...............I have decided NOT to shoot the afore mentioned Woody with my pistol !!! Good day to you all.
