walt1980
Waiting for my FAC to come back with .243 variation and doing lots of window shopping at the min. Prob going for a predator 8 mod, Leupold var3 4.5-14x50 scope on a howa 1500 20" barrel (been offered new at v cheap price) Any advantages to fluted barrels? As I understand it, weight is slightly less and barrel cools quicker. How much weight difference is there and can you feel it? And with an over the barrel mod, will it cool it any better as a big part of the barrel is covered anyway?? Over to you far more intelligent folk!!! JimLondon
How much are you paying for that set up? If you don't mind me asking. I've just bought a .243 howa combo deal and am well pleased hasn't got the fluted barrel by the way!

Don't think a reflex mod such as the Predator will work effectively with a fluted barrel? Trigger and out of box accuracy MUCH better with Tikka T3! al4x
Doesn't seem to be an issue on my finlight
Vipa
Doesn't seem to be an issue on my finlight Didn't know if there needed to be a seal at the rear bushing
EMcC
The seal is on the shoulder of the thread, the rear bush is purely to keep the mod aligned with the barrel.
jay222
I've got fluted barrels on three of my rifles and whilst I can't say the cool any quicker for sure they do look better and any weight saving is usually a good thing too. Not very helpful I know

That will depend on barrel length/thickness to start with and fluting length/depth, but not a lot is probably the answer, but it all counts if you are after a light rifle! And with an over the barrel mod, will it cool it any better as a big part of the barrel is covered anyway?? The fluting will allow greater movement of air around the rear bush, so it should aid cooling, but only slightly! Over to you far more intelligent folk!!! Dekers
Oh Yes, get the Predator 8 COMPACT for a .243, same baffle set but smaller and lighter and you will not notice any difference in sound moderation, and make sure it is a dedicated .243 size! I had a compact and sound reduction was really poor compared to a full length one on my .308 Certaily would never have another

No issue at all on a .243, even UK Custom Shop say its fine on a .243! Edited June 26, 2013 by Dekers
walt1980
Ok so, marginal gain from fluted barrel, and found a vgc 2nd hand predator 8 full length specific .243 for a good price! Think I'm gonna go for non fluted and see how I get on! Cheers everyone!
