Mr Majyk
simple question really, how long will on average would you guys try to squeak in a charlie before giving up and moving on? i'll put that question into a better context so it makes more sense. say for example youve found a nice patch of under growth which may hold the chance of having a charlie in it somewhere so you set up ready for an ambush and start squeaking with what ever your using, whistle etc, and you start squeaking. how long would you keep calling before giving up and moving onto somewhere else? 15mins 45mins 2hours? Archie-fox
15 mins for me then move on, on each permission i have i go to about 4 or 5 different places then get the fox-pro going, i might do 2 laps of each farm then move on, but flashing the lamp every 20 seconds..thats the way i do it.. Kes
We all have different ways but I find anything which is going to come will have within 15 minutes but I then wait a further 10-15 'just in case', since a wiser fox caller than me suggested I was always too impatient ! The extra time also allows time for a canny fox to settle. Call intermittently for maybe 2 /3 minutes every 6/7 minutes (what 'feels' right is best) search with the lamp when you believe the scene may have changed since the last time so if cover is close say 100 yds then check very frequently close up - longer a field away etc. Good luck
Mr Majyk
cheers for the info guys i'll try changing my tactics and see if that helps bag charlie. i asked because me and my shooting partner were layed up in ambush squeeking for round a half hour continuously and nothing showed so i just thought id see what the forum said. magman
Depends if after a problem charlie in one area i will stay 4-5 hours calling for 3-4 mins then silent for 5 mins then calling again with different calls . but if out and about looking sometimes i never call and sometimes call for 4-5 mins wait 10 mins and move on
al4x
Just remember some are shy of calls, if they are close and going to react they do fast, but if you are after a canny character sometimes some bait is the best way to get it into position. simon6ppc
depends on the fox pal to be honest,if i get to a place on foot i just wait a few minutes just to let the place settle down as i put it,i always shine first for a bit then call, not over call to much either as to me you can do it to much.,i can go on all night realy saying all different ways as every fox acts different,in the years ive done it just when i think ime an expert the next time i go ime not an expert any more as they out do you and make you look like an amature, think thats why i like it so much, if some one rings me and says simon will you shoot this fox ,i always reply I,LL TRY just way i am cheers simon...ps practise does make perfect..... dob
We had a fox that we saw week after week but would not stand still or come to squeak , one night we saw it about120yrds away and it trotted towards corner of field then ran so I gave it a wolf whistle and it stopped ,I kept doing little short whistles and it stood long enough for my mate to nail it with .243 . Sometimes u have to try different things on jumpy foxes.
