Baldrick
He's deeply anti-Defenders, but very pro Discovery 3s and every other Land Rover model. And I seem to remember all of the Top Gear team were overawed by the Defender-derived Bowler Wildcat.
pete k
doesnt hammond have a 110 defender , and also on the wall on the show where they have pics of cars that are cool, super cool ,**** there is always a red defender in the supercool bit. pete
bobt
But anyone over 5ft 10 will struggle in a Deafener
Baldrick
You're right, the Defender is on the 'Supercool' wall on the Cool Wall. I think it also won their Best Car Ever (not sure if that is the correct title).
Wookie
Yup, totally correct. Hamster represented it and it is _the_ best car of all time. If memory serves, Hammond's actually got two Landys, both defenders. Clarkson's got a point though.
Baldrick
Does anybody actually value Clarkson's opinions on cars though? He's not a professionally trained racing driver like Tiff Needell, not does he hold a racing licence like the Hamster. He's just a journalist, and a caricature. Don't get me wrong, I find him very entertaining, but I don't think he has a superhuman insight into automotive engineering. The Defender was never ging to be the luxurious, spacious and hugely powerful wagon that the Range Rover is. It's a mud plugger and a utility vehicle, and a world-beating one at that. The design hasn't changed in 60 years, because it just works better than anything else on the market.
Dunkield
He is an entertainer, and quite a funny one at that, but his driving ability is only slightly worse than his shooting ability (allegedly) Just think back to the laps he did round the Nurburgring when that German bird spent the afternoon laughing at his inability before knocking a country mile of his best time with one lap And how far he was down the lap times in the resonably priced car, despite his familiarity with the test track I certainly wouldn't be put off a car just because Top Gear didn't think it was any good. Baldrick
Clarkson is indeed an appalling shot.
Highlander
mmm. title a bit misleading...I don't think Clarkson actually has a Land Rover anymore...We see exactly the same with the “proper old Land Roverâ€. It’s rubbish: uncomfortable, slow, impractical and with prices starting at £20,000, not that cheap. But nobody has the courage to pull the plug on a 60-year tradition, and start again. But somebody should. damn good article though. Has anyone shown it to lurcherboy?
